So my campaign seed started last semester in school when at the end of a end-year one shot, my PCs accidentally released a magma dragon. Little do they know he's actually a magma dragon sorcerer trying to bring his lava army into the material plane. So he's trying to bring his minions in and changing material plane creatures into magma based versions of themselves.
I'm going to be beefing up mephits, using salamanders, fire giants, maybe some kobolds, young magma dragons, wizard minions mitigating the cold weakness from time to time, and drakes. I'm trying to create new creatures, though, not just use old ones. Anyone got any ideas?

Living Lahar: a pyroclastic flow of boiling-hot mud, functions like a water elemental but with a speed of 90 as it rushes and engulfs enemies (old Dragon magazine 2nd ed critter)
Chimchar! Yeah okay don't stab me I'll just put it away.
Lava ooze: It's an ooze that's practically indistinguishable from lava.
Vulcandyne: A living amalgamation of smoke, ash, and lightning can be spawned during major volcanic eruptions.
Phoenix Warrior: Basically a human with class levels, but with a flame aura and when they die they explode like a fireball caster level = their hit dice.
And yes, I am stealing a lOT of these from the Baldur's Gate series.
Ashkin: Fey that are made of stone and living fire, not generally that evil and mostly like stone golems with flame auras.
Cinders: The Dark Fey version of the above, nasty brutish fire critters that would LOVE to work for an evil creature of fire and hate.
Finally, if someone wants to draw from the political deck, it is not a stretch for the Efreet of the City of Brass to be taking notice of these goings-on, and it could be that the forces, resources, and targets that the dragon is using/hitting are an annoyance to them. Maybe an efreet lord was using a bunch of fire critters as cheap conscripts and mercenaries when Lord Magma showed up and "the promised time" was at hand and all his contracts got canceled and all his business dried up.

I can dig that entirely. I might use the cinders as messengers, generally just starting small fires to make a point, leaving a message Daredevil style.

I did an Elemental war back in the 80's and ran out of level appropriate monsters. A player gave me the solution: take their cross-elemental counterparts and convert them to the other three elements. The pool of foes the players could face effectively tripled.
By taking in the para-elementals, you should be able to generate a lot of niche filler foes and allies. I'd give you my Soot Dragon, but the paper work is currently lost. It's basically a weaker version of the Red with a cloud breath that creates burning ash and obscuring smoke, further fanned by it's wings. It is the apex predator on the 'Plane of Ash, a truly remorselessly bleak place. If it weren't for the neat toys to be found in the lost dungeons, nobody would ever go there.

Cool, I might stat one up as a drake instead, have them being cousins to fire drakes. With some input, we could make a terrifying crowd control monster.
