Last night, I got stuck in a Web spell. When I made my monk I was under the impression that if I had a high Combat Maneuver Defense, I would not need to take ranks in Escape Artist skill to escape grapples, etc.
In the Web spell description, it says you can make a combat maneuver roll or use Escape Artist to escape the webs. When I look up the combat maneuver rules, I only see where you roll to make Combat Maneuver Attacks, not Defenses. Defense is instead listed as 10+DEX+STR.
If the spell DC is 15 for Web & I am a monk - I could just roll a d20 + DEX + STR + Monk WIS and if I get higher than a 15, I would then be free of the webs??
Not sure how a Combat Maneuver Defense roll works....
Thanks for clarification :)

Let's get one thing clear here; the initial effect of the Web (which is a form of entanglement) is a DC 15 Reflex save to avoid entanglement. Even upon making the save, and if you move faster than half your base speed in a round while within the webs, you must make the Reflex Save again, or become entangled, or fall, or whatever (that's not something that really needs clarification to answer your question, and not something I will spend time elaborating on since it would state within the spell description).
If you fail the Save, you are considered Entangled (or is it something else? I remember it being entangled), and in order to break free/remove that condition, as it says, you can choose to perform an Escape Artist check (which is just a D20 + Skill Modifier), or a CMB Check (which is a D20 + Str + BAB + Misc. stuff).
Once you break free from the Entangled condition, the same effects apply as if you actually made the save. To avoid becoming entangled within the webs again, you should move at half your speed. Going above that again requires a Reflex Save, most likely the same DC as before.
Hope that answers your questions.

Okay got it - yes I missed the initial REFLEX save by rolling a 1.
So because I have only a 10 STR, there is no point even trying to use a CMB check.I should just stick with an Escape Artist check since I have a 16 DEX at least
Thank you everyone for your help!

There is a feat that allows you to substitute your STR bonus to CMB with your Dexterity modifier instead; might be something you'd want to pick up later down the road when you have a 20+ Dex score.
