So, when I charge an opponent I must move to the closest square from which I can attack it.
Question is, what if I have the Lunge Feat and want to charge a foe?
Can I choose to employ Lunge on my charge, thus being able to stop one square farther away from my target?
Am I forced to employ Lunge on my charge, as not doing so will result in a target square that is farther away from my starting position... which would be illegal?

Yes.

No.
Lunge: "You can increase the reach of your melee attacks... You must decide to use this ability before any attacks are made."
Charge: "You must move to the closest space from which you can attack the opponent."
Lunge is optional. If you haven't chosen to use Lunge, then the closest space from which you can attack the opponent is the one adjacent to him. (Adjust for reach as needed)
If you do choose to use Lunge, then you must stop at the first square where you can hit him, you don't have the option of moving in closer.
