Undead and Antimagic field

Rules Questions

Are undead (Su) all the time, or just when they're being created? Obviously the Create Undead (or whatever other spell/ability) being used to create a zombie would fail if the caster or the corpse were inside an AMF. But, what happens to a zombie who walks into one? They don't just fall into a heap ( = become a corpse again), right?

Undead are once-living creatures animated by spiritual or supernatural forces.

Which is not terribly relevant, but this is:

Antimagic Field: "The spell has no effect on golems and other constructs that are imbued with magic during their creation process and are thereafter self-supporting (unless they have been summoned, in which case they are treated like any other summoned creatures). Elementals, undead, and outsiders are likewise unaffected unless summoned."

Awesome, thanks!

Additionally, I seem to recall a developer post stating essentially the same thing. It was specifically in reference to undead existing and functioning within the Mana Wastes. Once animated, an undead creature does not require continued magic to sustain its existence unless the creature's description states otherwise.

Kind of weird that a zombie is self sustained in it's magic, but a magic weapon isn't...

Feels like they should have made undead do something akin to suffocating in an anti-magic field... except using charisma or something. But that's my feelings, not RAW.

Actually - create undead is instantaneous. The creation of an undead is a magic event - once they are created they no longer are magic.

Try detect magic on them - if it works then they cease.

A different issue is controlling undead. I had an Oracle of Bone that got control of three ZjuJu zombies. They walked behind her - weapons drawn - as her bodyguard.

The player didn't expected to be backstabbed when the Juju zombies realised they were free to act when they entered a non- magic zone.

Really? Undead don't have an aura of necromancy on them, as powerful as their HD? So create undead is like a fusion reaction, you just need to get it moving and off it goes?

Correct. Detect magic doesn't even help find, for instance, fire elementals since "Outsiders and elementals are not magical in themselves." It says nothing at all about undead. If you want to detect udead, the character uses detect evil (for aligned undead) or even more specifically detect undead. If detect magic found undead, cleric's wouldn't have detect undead on their spell list...
