This is the discussion thread for Blood Red Roses: A Skull & Shackles Campaign.

DM Immortal |

Race/Class: Core, APG, UC, UM, ARG (no custom races, and with approval only)
Abilities: 20-pt Buy
Alignment: Any non-evil, I will accept 1 Lawful Evil so long as they can play well with others; I suggest against LG as well, as pirates are not always villains, but they are rarely heroes
Wealth: Average by class
Character Traits: Two traits plus one Campaign Trait (from S&S Players Guide)

Dain GM |

Hmm... Interesting...
Well, I'll get to work on something soon.
Question: it says "no custom races/and with approval only" - does that mean you allow custom races with approval - or that custom races don't exist in your world - and that all other classes/races must meet your approval? Sorry - bit confused there is all regarding what must meet approval.
Meantime, I'll see what I can do.

DM Immortal |

Hey hey hey, theres only room for ONE GM/DM in this place! lol
It means uncommon races from the ARG are approval only and no custom races.

DM Immortal |

Thanks for coming over. I think this will be a lot of fun. Let me know if you have any questions. My plan is to get characters worked out with you guys before I open up a recruitment for a couple more people as I am planning a group of between 5-6 so if Yillim and Waiph both agree we will still need 1-2 more people. My idea was to open up the recruitment thread and have people submit their characters in-character and start RPing among each other. If you guys want to join in the RP and see how the dynamics start that would be great.
So let me know about concept ideas on here and we can go from there.

Ariarh Kane |

I'm thinking of an Elven Freebooter. I'm working on it now and hopefully will get something together for you soon. I am taking the alternative racial trait Spirit of Waters which replaces Elven Magic and Weapon Familiarity. Thanks for giving me the green light on that. :)

DM Immortal |

No problem! Looking forward to seeing what you both come up with.

Ariarh Kane |

I need some clarification regarding aquatic elves, please. In some places, I have read that they get gills and can survive out of water for 1 hour per point of constitution. I have also read that they get the amphibious special quality, which means they can survive indefinitely on land. Are you okay with both for this game (gills means they can breathe underwater which is of course excellent lol) or are there restrictions I should be aware of before I continue? Thanks.

DM Immortal |

Aquatic Elf is fine I think with the caveat that in order to retain play balance I am going to give them the restriction similar to the Gillman which is the Water Dependent trait which is "their body requires constant submersion in fresh or salt water. Those who spend more than 1 full day without fully submerging themselves in water risk internal organ failure, painful cracking of the skin, and death within 4d6 hours." The reason being is that Aquatic Elves are basically elves with an additional bonus on top without anything to balance it. It is the same restriction as the Gillman race which is basically an aquatic human type race.

DM Immortal |

sounds good guys! Let me know if you have any questions. So far we have a Gunslinger (dain) and a freebooter Ranger (ariarh). I plan on having 5 or 6 people for the game (probably 6) so as soon as you guys get me concepts you are happy with (I don't need the whole sheet, just race/class/bit of background, etc.) I will open up the recruitment thread and you guys can start interacting with the submitters. I plan on having them submit in character so that I can get an idea on play and writing style, as well as group dynamic. I'd like to open up the recruitment thread tomorrow or wednesday so even if you don't have builds by then a concept would be great to go off of.
So excited for the game!
Also Waiph and Joe have gone evil I think so that is it as far as evil goes the rest must be neutral or good. (no lawful good though as it really wouldnt work as a pirate lol)

DM Immortal |

I may stick with my original idea then and my elf had an ancestor who was an aquatic elf. Thanks for the information/clarification. My character is chaotic good.
Awesome! You still going with the Freebooter Ranger?

DM Immortal |

Ok so far we have:
An Elven Freebooter Ranger
A Human Buccaneer Gunslinger
An unknown race Tattoo Sorcerer with an Infernal Bloodline
I am just waiting to see if Yillim is going to submit something and then I will open up the recruitment. This party will be 6 people in total and so I will be looking for 2 or 3 (depending upon Yillim's response). I am extremely excited about the game and look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with.
As far as recruitment goes, you are all welcome to join in the RP that I will be requesting but please give it some time for the submitters to get the ball rolling. Post in character only and I will let everyone know that you are the preselected ones. Also please conform to the recruitment posting just like the others who are submitting. (i.e. concept, background, answering questions I may have, etc.)
I will be putting up the recruitment thread probably around 3pm Eastern. I will keep recruitment open until friday night when I will make my selections with your input. Please only give me input by PM and not on this discussion thread.

DM Immortal |

Good but put it in the recruitment thread and answer the questions I put there.

DM Immortal |

To everyone that was selected...WELCOME TO HELL!!! ;-)
First, congratulations on being selected.
Second, before we start the actual campaign I need everyone to post their full characters on their profiles for ease of access for me. Also if you could post any backstory you may have their as well that would be awesome.
In addition in the "Race" section of your profiles if you could put some pertinent information for me so that I can see it on each post without having to go into your profiles that would be good too.
The format should go like this
Race and Class (archetype if any) (Armor Class / Hit Points / Saving Throws / Initiative / Perception)
Here is an example from another character I have:
Grimspawn Tiefling Alchemist (Beastmorph) (AC 14 / HP 9 / F +2 R +4 W +0 / Init. +2 / Perc. +4)
Please let me know if you have any questions and I can't wait to get started. You have some time as I don't foresee starting until monday probably depending upon how fast everyone finishes their characters.

Rain Taneththir |

All but my backstory is done. All other stats are posted on profile. I will get it done by tomorrow.
Welcome to the successful applicants!

Sko |

Thanks for having me in the game!
Everything should be in my profile, including backstory. If there's other info you need or want let me know.
When I get home from work I'll touch up my profile, when you export a HeroLab file it leaves out certain abilities or crops the description of what it does.
I'm posting from the Eastern time zone if that matters.

DM Immortal |

Very happy to have you! It should be a lot of fun.
If you use herolab thats great. Can you send me the file so I can load it up in mine?

Will have everything formatted shortly. Thanks for the opportunity to play in the campaign. Sounds like it is going to be a blast.

DM Immortal |

-2 for Str 8
7 for Dex 15
2 for Con 12
5 for Int 14
0 for Wis 10
10 for Cha 16 + 2 Racial
2. Was it intentional to take augment summoning and then not take summon monster I?
Let me know but other than that you look really good.

DM Immortal |

Variel I am really looking forward to it also and you are most welcome. Your RP was really great.
You are looking good for your sheet from what I can tell also.
Sko you are looking good on your sheet as well.

Seijiro |

Thanks for having me in the game! I will change the format of my profile so it reads the way you want as soon as I can... My full profile is on my profile already along with backstory too...

Seijiro |

Character Traits: Two traits plus one Campaign Trait (from S&S Players Guide)
Um... does 'two traits PLUS one campaign trait mean we get 3 traits? If so I need to change my sheet and find another trait to take... Please confirm if I am reading this correctly. Thanks.

Yes, Jiro, three traits (one of which needs to be a campaign trait). *does her best to imitate DM Immortal's powerful voice. lol*:)

Seijiro |

cool - *runs off to research a 3rd trait to take*

Sko |

Updated profile with info the HeroLab export left out. I'll get that file mailed out to you shortly.
One mechanics question: how are we going to handle initiative? In the Jade Regent game I'm in, there are 6 of us and we use regular initiative. The only problem with it is that larger combats can really drag on (and there are 7 of us). The combat in the goblin village was fun but I didn't like that it took almost two weeks to resolve. It also kind of stinks when you're dead last in initiative waiting on 5 other players to post and the DM to post 4-5 times; you have no idea when your turn to post is going to come up and even one person having a delay in posting can be frustrating.
Group initiative isn't perfect either (like when the enemy goes first and the entire party is flat-footed on the first round) but combat goes by in a fraction of the time and much smoother.
Either way is fine by me; I've played it both ways but since our group is a bit larger than normal I thought it merited mention.

Dhaavan |

If we cluster the characters, and run init as everyone goes one at a time, that could work?
If there's a group of players first, then enemies then the rest of the players, we cluster it so after the last enemy has gone, all the players go, in whatever order. Then the enemies go.
There's the possibility of a player in the first group that moved in round 1 before the enemies to go again before one of the other players wrote out their move, but that shouldn't be a huge deal at the end of the day.
there is also having players make their moves for the round in clusters, but at the end fo the round, or before the enemy cluster's next turn, the GM describes what all happened over the round, so everything's summarized, and we get a cool cinematic description in a single post.

Valeros Jaloksin |

Immortal, I've updated the sheet. Yeah I copied and pasted from another profile for the formatting, missed that edit.
On the init topic, I've had good success on the boards with something similar to what Dhaavan has described. Once init is rolled, the various PC's go in clumps based on their init, on a first post-first acted basis. That way no one is waiting on anyone, if you're the first poster you go first in that init "group". Speeds things up fairly well.

DM Immortal |

I am going to be using group initiative just because I feel like it works smoothest over PBP.
I will do it by average init for the group vs average init for the bad guys. I am flexible though so if we need to revisit we can.
If you are all ok with it I will roll init because it makes things MUCH faster.
I plan to put up the first post probably sunday night and I cannot wait to get started! I am so excited about this group and cannot believe how lucky I am to have you guys.
If anyone has any questions please let me know! :-)

DM Immortal |

Basically the sheet just need to be updated a little bit. Super excited to get the game started and see what Seijiro gets up to! :-)

Seijiro |

changes made to profile - weapons updated, and lists cleared as requested.
Wheeee! Can hardly wait to get started!!!
