Stonelord Earth Elemental Companion?

Rules Questions

Curious as to what equipment the earth elemental that the Stonelord (ARG) receives can wear/utilize. I am of the *assumption* that it is limited to barding and neck slot, as per animal companions, but I'm up for being pleasantly surprised.

Wow, good question....

Grand Lodge

It's like an eidolon, but with even less constant form. Arguably nothing except ioun stones. Has anyone seen a Paizo stat block for an elemental equipped with magic items (not a rhetorical question, I would like to know if we have any guidance)?

Even if this is an old post, is there any official clarification on it?

there is no reason why you couldn't buy a mithril chain shirt for an earth elemental.

other barding is not feasible without penalties because it does not get armor feats.

Just to dredge this post up to get some clarity.

Humanoid I'm assuming means it's proficient in simple weapons (per the whole humanoid clause bit)

but on towards the bigger questions, I'm assuming that the stonelord elemental pet uses the parts of the druid animal companion as is necessary.

IE it's hd at lvl 8 is not 4d10 (as a normal large) but rather 7d10 as a lvl 8 AC.

Saves, based off of AC rather than the elemental, feats from AC (and thus chosen by player) and does not need to know tricks.

Anyone have any info in regards to these statements of mine, or do they seem legit?

It is not humanoid, it's an elemental. It might be humanoid shaped, but it has the outsider type. The good news is, that means they are proficient with all simple and martial weapons but since they don't have armor listed in their statblocks, they aren't proficient with any armor or shields.

As far as I can tell, they don't use the animal companion entries, instead you use the elemental listing direct from the bestiary. It doesn't mention Animal Companion rules nor does it give an animal companion stat block entry for the elemental to build from.

OUTSIDER

An outsider is at least partially composed of the essence (but not necessarily the material) of some plane other than the Material Plane. Some creatures start out as some other type and become outsiders when they attain a higher (or lower) state of spiritual existence. An outsider has the following features.

d10 Hit Dice.
Base attack bonus equal to total Hit Dice (fast progression).
Two good saving throws, usually Reflex and Will.
Skill points equal to 6 + Int modifier (minimum 1) per Hit Die. The following are class skills for outsiders: Bluff, Craft, Knowledge (planes), Perception, Sense Motive, and Stealth. Due to their varied nature, outsiders also receive 4 additional class skills determined by the creature's theme.
Traits: An outsider possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature's entry).

Darkvision 60 feet.
Unlike most living creatures, an outsider does not have a dual nature—its soul and body form one unit. When an outsider is slain, no soul is set loose. Spells that restore souls to their bodies, such as raise dead, reincarnate, and resurrection, don't work on an outsider. It takes a different magical effect, such as limited wish, wish, miracle, or true resurrection to restore it to life. An outsider with the native subtype can be raised, reincarnated, or resurrected just as other living creatures can be.
Proficient with all simple and martial weapons and any weapons mentioned in its entry.
Proficient with whatever type of armor (light, medium, or heavy) it is described as wearing, as well as all lighter types. Outsiders not indicated as wearing armor are not proficient with armor. Outsiders are proficient with shields if they are proficient with any form of armor.
Outsiders breathe, but do not need to eat or sleep (although they can do so if they wish). Native outsiders breathe, eat, and sleep.

Actually, I take that back, I should have read further. The elemental subtype over-rides quite a bit of that:

Quote:

Elemental Subtype: An elemental is a being composed entirely from one of the four classical elements: air, earth, fire, or water. An elemental has the following features.

Immunity to bleed, paralysis, poison, sleep effects, and stunning.
Not subject to critical hits or flanking. Does not take additional damage from precision-based attacks, such as sneak attack.
Proficient with natural weapons only, unless generally humanoid in form, in which case proficient with all simple weapons and any weapons mentioned in its entry.
Proficient with whatever type of armor (light, medium, or heavy) it is described as wearing, as well as all lighter types. Elementals not indicated as wearing armor are not proficient with armor. Elementals are proficient with shields if they are proficient with any form of armor.
Elementals do not breathe, eat, or sleep.

Elementals are not listed with either weapons or armor so they are proficient with their natural slam attacks only. They do get some kick butt defenses in return though. Though it does say larger earth elementals take on a humanoid shape.

2 people marked this as FAQ candidate.

Larger earth elementals often have a stony humanoid appearance

There's some debate over this, but I'm seeing it as pretty straight forward that "they are generally humanoid in shape" a) due to art work, b) due to text that describes them and c) no other elemental has descriptions like "This hulking, roughly humanoid creature of dirt and stone explodes up from the earth, faceless save for two glowing gemstone eyes." except the earth elemental

The Stonelord's "stone servant" doesn't advance as an animal companion or special mount. It just starts off as a small earth elemental like the one in the Bestiary and later grows into a medium, large, huge, greater, and elder earth elemental as the Stonelord levels. These creatures are statted out with feats, skills, etc.

Deciding whether the elemental is proficient with simple weapons or not could be tough. I'd think it should be able to wear magic items in most slots though (whether or not it would be proficient in their use). Proficiency isn't really a question for stuff like cloaks, belts, amulets, etc.

The really tough question is what items an earth elemental can bring along wihen it uses earthglide. I'd guess that equipment and items carried go along for the ride, but I haven't seen any official clarification, and I could imagine DMs ruling otherwise. This doesn't come up for druids wildshaped into earth elementals since their equipment melds into their forms, but it could be important for an improved familiar or stone servant.

That's why I was asking, because it's ability doesn't quite seem to clear.

Quote:
Stone Servant (Su): At 5th level, a stonelord may call a Small earth elemental to her side, as a paladin calls her mount. This earth elemental is Lawful Good in alignment and possesses the celestial template, and it increases in size as the stonelord gains levels, becoming Medium at 8th level, Large at 11th level, Huge at 14th level, Greater at 17th level, and Elder at 20th level. This ability replaces divine bond.

the question I guess wasn't worded well but now that you've mentioned it, I was focused too much on the mount part and not enough on the call part, ie

Quote:
Once per day, as a full-round action, a paladin may magically call her mount to her side. This ability is the equivalent of a spell of a level equal to one-third the paladin's level. The mount immediately appears adjacent to the paladin. A paladin can use this ability once per day at 5th level, and one additional time per day for every 4 levels thereafter, for a total of four times per day at 17th level.
