1001 uses for the portable hole

Gamer Life General Discussion

If you could create a portable hole of any size and shape besides the 6ft diameter by 10ft deep cylinder as found in the item's description (hint, hint Paizo) what size and shape would you make it and what would you use it for?

Grand Lodge

An entrance to Bag World.

So I take it you've got a couple billion gold lying around to pay for it?

Go find that Plane that has a Sea of Holy Water, fill it, and then empty it on the Negative Energy Plane to see what happens.

Liberty's Edge

Never be caught off guard in the privy ever again!

I'd finally be able to catch that blasted road runner!

They had this thread in the Dragon Magazine when I was a Kid. You could have a portable hole as a ship's sail -a furled sail is a smuggler's sail.

What would you do with a portable hole of any size Liz?

The Exchange

1) Cloth armor, 2x2'portable holes(front and back), cloth inner layer.
2) Shield feat tree, Portable hole mounted on shield. Engulf one enemy at time.

No one has any interesting uses for a portable hole of any size?

1)Portable labratory.

2) Get a bottle of air and a sustaining spoon. A number of people can live there ... until it fills with poo.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

3) welcome mat.

Add a sphere of annihilation and you've got instant waste management.

Oh, and in answer to the original question: Obviously I'd use a standard-sized one to hold beer.

Was this a "how would you use it IRL?"

I figured answers like #1 would be more common than this.

Fill with acid (lava, water and piranhas, whatever). Place on ground in dungeon corridor. Voila! Poor man's create acid/lava/water and piranhas pit spell.

Okay, at 20,000 a pop, rich man's create acid/lava/water and piranhas pit spell.

1) Portable foxhole. 75% cover.

2) Destabilize/collapse walls. Mess to cleanup afterwards though.

That's usually what I use them for, provided that one remembers to only open the hole on a vertical surface. Lab, portable room - really effective if you use illusory wall or mirage arcana or something similar to disguise the thing...

I love the 'welcome mat" idea! I normally used them to get away from traps the rogue didn't find (the boulder rolling down the hall to crush adventurers. Throw it down and jump in, holing the edge and pulling the other side close.).
I like the sail idea as well. I have used it on the front of a shield (until it was almost torn).
How about one to cover the front of a ballista or catapult rock for removing barriers?

Stealthfully attach it to the wall of an enemy keep your army is trying to breech. Throw a bag of holding in from a safe distance.

I seem to remember an arrow designed to do the same thing, but still...That is expensive Ammo!

True, but if you absolutely must breech a wall its tough to do it better.

On another note a "suicide bomber" could do something similar in the throne room when the king is meeting with his advisors. If you can get all the important people in one room you could topple a kingdoms power structure in a few seconds.

I just had a Monty Python moment....message for you sir. Are you familiar with the portable hole/bag of holding arrow?

The portable hole from out of the blue! Kind of like the anvils from ACME. It is great for getting rid of those pesky power gamers!

Oh, I got it! Curtains! Just drape it behind a door, and you run in (side stepping the curtain). The persons chasing you....well...you know.

I love the concept ... might need to rig up a way for the one to enter the other as required ... might I recommend telekinesis, since the lightest bag IIRC weighs, what, 20 pounds? :)

Portable hot tub. Aw yeah!

Our adventuring group recently acquired a portable hole so we were having a general discussion of its uses. A question arose:

Could an adventuring group use a portable hole to go through a 10' thick wall? The thought was the group could open the portable hole on the wall, climb inside the hole, close the hole from the inside, then reopen it on the opposite side of the wall, climb out of the hole, and pick up the hole thereby passing through the wall leaving no trace of their passage.

Thoughts?

The Exchange

A few thoughts.
Wouldn't dimension door be more appropriate?
No?

I am going to leave the fantastical physics discussion of manipulating an extra-dimensional space from the inside for someone else. Lets talk ramifications.

1)Congrats you've created a portable tunnel. Bypass anything. Think about that and pity the DM and/or security minded PC. Who needs rogues anymore? Not that it really needs to be discussed. Rogues. Who needs'em? [/troll]
2)If the PCs can do it, any trapped NPC could also. Hey send in a mook to close up the portable hole, rotate the entrance away and walla! another asset for the BBEG. One less for the PCs.
3) Random table along 3 axis opening. Rock destabilized, crush occupants or alternately drops them in high vaulted room (falling dmg plus how to re-acquire hole in ceiling) or simply run out of air. Short-lived experiment, much DM amusement.

What is needed for a portable hole to open... as stated on the description, it say when placed upon a surface, but if spread out via using telekinesis would not this also work?

If statement above is workable, then moving the portable hole over an enemy then folding in the sides so it stops working as a portable hole, it would trap and kill large and smaller creatures that must breath in 10 minutes.
Alternatively cast fly and fly(or use dimension door) to get 200+ feet into the air, then opening the hole and have the enemy take 20d6 falling damage

I personally have used portable hole to carry around a bolder that was at my telekinesis limit, also another character had a bag of holding.
Plan B was to take out the enemy with placing my portable hole in the bag of holding and presto enemy in Astral Plane, hopefully just the enemy

If using Time Stop could you safely place a portable hole in a bag of holding then move away(more then 10 ft.) before it's effect happened aka Time Stop ended?

You could have one made that is one mile across. Then use an airship to drop a bag of holding into it. Poof! Instant nuke.
