Alchemist Feat question

Rules Questions

Scarab Sages

Perhaps this has been asked, but i've not considered an Alchemist until now. I have a question before I start my build.

Can I take the feat Extra Discovery, and use that discovery at 1st level?

I was not sure since alchemists do not get discoveries until 2nd level.

I just want to make sure one way or the other before I start planing out a character.

Thanks

Honestly? I can't see any reason you can't do this, reading the feat.

With my spelling, I thought I'd toe the line and not pick on the wrong choice of words. I wouldn't want to be a heel.

Do you have the Discovery class feature at 1st level? That's the prerequisite for the feat.

(The answer is no, you cannot take it at first level.)

@Cheapy

There are a lot of cases that rely on class features you don't have yet.

Paladins/Rangers can use wands, even though they don't get spells until 4th level.
You can take a trait that benefits a spell, even if you don't have the spell yet.
Heck, you can take Empower spell at first level, and can't even use that.

So I don't see how having a class feature 'further down the line' disallows the feat.

This works the same way for the Magus. Since you don't get an Arcana until 3rd, you can't take Extra Arcana until then. If you choose the Bladebound archetype, you are not able to take Extra Arcana until 6th level. As far as I'm aware, any "Extra" requires you to have the class ability before you can take the feat.

He can't select it because he doesn't meet the prerequisites.

Paladins/Rangers can use wands because they have a spell list, which is the requirement for those items.

Traits don't usually have prerequisites.

Empower Spell doesn't have a prerequisite either.

Cheapy and noswald have it right. This question has been asked MANY times for probably every single class that gets something like this; Rogues (talents), Barbarians (rage powers), Paladins (mercies), etc. If you don't have the class ability at your current level you don't meet the prereqs for the Extra feats.

Scarab Sages

The only reason I know this one quirk is because I have a Bladebound Magus and was trying to get an Extra Arcana at 3rd even though I didn't have an Arcana to start with. He now has to wait until 6th level, but he's been a GM dump and is level 4.2 and looks like he will be fun to play at GenCon.

Yea, it's one of the things bladebounds need to keep in mind :)

I will second Eric on seconding noswald and cheapy. Discovery class feature is a prereq.

Level 1 Paladin cannot take Extra Mercy feat.
