I'm doing up some treasure for my PCs in their current adventure, and I am thinking of tossing in a Lesser Metamagic rod for the party wizard. What would be the most useful to a level 3-4 wizard? I haven't really dabbled much in the meta area, most of my PCs don't use the feats much do to the level increases, but I figured that with a rod, we can see how much it would get used.
Would need to keep it to 5000gp or less to keep it balanced. And there is not a lot of magic per PC right now.
Any thought or opinions will be welcomed.
Thanks!

Here's a list of all the metamagic rods that cost 3,000 gold. My favorites would be Extend, Elemental, Reach, or Selective, depending on what types of spells your wizard likes to cast.

Bouncing
Disruptive
Ectoplasmic
Elemental
Extended
Intensified
Lingering
Reach
Selective
Silent

Except I am pretty sure he has to hit the touch AC with it.
Show me the fighter who tries to dodge the cleric's heals. I mean, the cleric doesn't have to successfully connect with a melee touch attack in order to deliver touch spells, otherwise there'd be a 1/20 chance of every touch spell cast on an ally forcing the caster to wait another round for a chance to deliver it. I don't see why it would be different for a ranged touch against a willing target.

What spells does the party wizard cast?
What's the rest of the group?
Where is the treasure coming from?

Well the wizard just hit 3rd level, and his staple spells are color spray, sleep, magic missile. Don't remember right off the top of my head what else he has.
The rest of the party includes...
Fighter lvl 3, big axe human
Elven cleric lvl 3 of torag
Gunslinger lvl 3
Dwarven ranger
The fighter is a good front line guy. The gunslinger is a work in progress, while the ranger is a new addition to the party (the players previous character died fighting bandits). So as you can see there is not much magical ability in the party right now, so wanna give them a bit of a leg up without over doing it. They are going to find a treasure trove and want to have a good useful item in there for each PC 3-4k max in value each.

I'd look at his school of magic. And his metamagic feats (if any)
If he hasn't got energy admixture or elemental spell feat I'd give him the elemental one.
Even if he doesn't use a lot of damaging energy spells yet he will start to do so in the future.
There are times when burning hands gets better than color spray for example.

A fat/slow cleric may really appreciate a reach rod...
Scratch "Reach" from my list. I was thinking of cleric use, and you want something for the wizard.
Ectoplasmic has been suggested, and I agree that it's a useful rod. But as a GM, I wouldn't want to give that out until the party had faced ethereal enemies at least once. I don't like to give out the solution to a problem until the problem has been encountered, or I feel like I've robbed the party of doing problem-solving on their own.
Perhaps a 1st level Pearl of Power instead?
Pearls of Power are always welcome:)

If your wizard doesn't have any MM feats, he'll thank you a million times for an extend rod. 2H/level Mage Armor? Thanks! 2Min/Level Shield? Thanks, that will last me 2 encounters now! 4H/level Ant Haul? Thanks! Now I can cast the spell in the early morning and be able to carry all my stuff all day without being in medium encumbrance!
