Cool. My rules are an addition to ship to ship combat, more specifically boarding actions. If people are interested in playtesting, message me and I will give you a copy of the rules.

It's high time I tried my hand at something like this.

Shadow Lodge

Working on my sub now.

I just sent in a Weal or Woe article today. I'll probably put something else together, though I haven't settled on anything in particular yet. I'm considering some rogue talents or adapting the style feat mechanics to fencing styles for swashbucklery action. Thoughts?

So Tim what are the flavour of submissions so far? What is under-represented?

About 12 so far, and the field is wide open! Keep 'em coming! Remember, this is a PDF only issue, so I am not limited to a page count!

Yeah! Give us more content! Pages and pages and ...

wait, I'm going to have to put this all together ...

Ah, what the hell, give us pages and pages and pages of content! Dare I dream of <gasp> a triple digit page count?!?!?!

I just finished three sea shanty's one for the Chelish Navy one for dwarven traders and a Pathfinder take on drunken sailor

Worthy Submission senses tingling...

Darn. Thought about that as well, but life got in my way. Looking forward to them!

Ruyan.

I'm tinkering with an archetype and have some other ideas on the backburner.

Still working on my gig for LPJr. Once that's done, I've got a couple of ideas brewing.

Had some building ideas, fun with Seaside Properties and creative usage of spells for profit, naturally. Let's see if I can get them polished and ready...

Working up some pirate-y magic items. Hopefully they'll be of interest.

Sovereign Court Wayfinder, PaizoCon Founder

So, Editor in Chief Tim here.....I want to let everyone considering sending a submission to consider that one of the Weal or Woe submissions will be the basis for a Side-Trek adventure article, written by Larry Wilhelm. We did this in #6, because we received a short story and an associated Weal or Woe article that really did require an adventure to go with them. And it turned out GREAT!

Now, I realize that this might result in a dozen Weal or Woe articles getting submitted, so know this as well: I can only use a maximum of 4 Weal or Woe articles in an issue. Usually, we use 3. So, if you really want something to make it in, your chances are better with the bestiary, a PrC or archetype, fiction, or magic items.

BUT, if you've got a GREAT idea for 2 NPCs and a possible hook that makes a wonderful side-trek adventure, then PLEASE get to writing it ASAP!

Oooooh. Be sure and keep at that...I'd like to see the result!

Also, it's been a while since we ran a Kingdom Building article. Putting the maritime spin on those rules would be a nice addition to the issue, don't you agree?

(Note: we often get a number of these, and we then merge all the ideas into a solid article, so keep that in mind, too).

Dot.

Got back from GenCon and I have time now to work on stuff. I am going to try and finish up the boarding rules for submission. Once that is done, I will work on other possible submissions.

I'll stick to sending more Bestiary entries probably. Unless I try to convince you that my spells are good enough to be published in Wayfinder.

Spoiler:
Symbol of persuasion!

Sovereign Court Wayfinder, PaizoCon Founder

OK. I have a bit of a mystery.

I opened up my Dropbox, to start creating the folders for Wayfinder #8. That's when I spot a PDF I don't remember downloading. It's a 2-page article titled "Colloquium of Abendego".

Here's what it is, quoting the PDF:

"Seeing the need to better unify the disparate islands of the
Shackles, the Master of Gales has formed a unique school to train
sailors, officers, and spellcasters in the defense of his homeland.
This school is known as the Colloquium of Abendego."

I don't remember getting this from anyone. If it was sent as a submission, well, it's not in the Word format, so I can't necessarily use it.

Can anyone identify where this PDF article came from???

Sovereign Court Wayfinder, PaizoCon Founder

Mystery solved. N'wah sent it to me, in a FB private message thread.

So, uh....nevermind!

I've got two archetypes (a sorcerer and a magus), but they really don't fit this issue's nautical theme. Hmmm...

Why not use an open format?

Why not use an open format?

Because the styles used in the DOC format make it much, much easier when importing the files into InDesign for layout.

Timitius, will you work the weal or woe into the side trek/fiction? Or does L Wilhelm know what the WorW is about. Or does the WoW author need to have an idea of what the other two are about first? I guess I just want to know which comes first the egg or the sea-serpent? :)

Also have you been inundated yet?

Do you mean that this probably very expensive piece of software is not able to correctly import open formats? Shouldn’t you ask them to fix it, or use a software that has not this problem?

I usually copy directly from one window to the next. :)

Interesting fact: Arguing with a publication's submission rules is unlikely to increase the chances of your submission being accepted.

And as they go, Wayfinder's submission rules are very light and easy to follow. I've seen rule sets that were much, much stricter.

Any news on how the mag is going?

Wow. Lots of talk going on! Great!

Regarding the text formatting, Liz knows best on why DOC files and not others. Point of fact: ANYTHING that makes layout easier down the line is well worth adhering to. See, if we had to accommodate all the different text formats, then I'd have to spend extra time converting everything over to the Word format, so that I could apply the Wayfinder style templates, which DO translate over to InDesign somewhat nicely. In the conversion process, there would likely be errors, which equals MORE time I have to spend "fixing" said article. I shudder to think what tabbed based table text would do. Ugh.

Bottom line....if your submission takes me 30 minutes to fix the text formatting, that's 30 minutes I should have been able to spend on other things. And time is VERY precious to this completely volunteer editor.

Regarding Weal or Woe articles....Larry and I do not know what article will be the one that becomes a side trek. I'm slowing assimilating the submissions, and mulling over which ones lend themselves further to a plot and side trek excursion. I'll select 2-3 candidate submissions, and let Larry decide which one inspires him the most.

Fiction is currently NOT part of the plan. Last time, the Weal or Woe article came with an accompanying 750-word story expanding the NPCs' story. It was fairly easy to take all that in and conclude that a sidetrek adventure was feasible. Including accompanying fiction is not a requirement; it may help (if it's really good), or it may hinder (if it's not good).

As for how #8 is shaping up....the Submissions are:
6 bestiary entries
4 class articles
3 rules articles
2 fiction pieces
3 Weal or Woes

That's 18 submissions so far. So, we are lacking in fiction, and have no fluff pieces. We have a good start on the bestiary, class-related articles, and Weal or Woe articles. I fully expect more rules-based articles (this would include Kingdom-building stuff).

There are a few here that are not on-theme, though. And I have at least 2-3 submissions from past issues that will be used for #8 (as they fit the nautical theme quite well now).

I need to write faster, I have a fiction I put aside last month and it sounds like there aren't may of those yet.

I might be able to lend a hand on this front. I've come into some additional free-time for the next couple of weeks. So, I might bang out that fiction piece, after all. The concept I have in mind might need a bit more room than the 1500-word article size, though. But, if you're short on fiction, maybe a longer piece is warranted?

Checks Wayfinder #7

We still have lots of room for bestiaries? Right?

Also, would new nautical spells or magic items count as class/rules articles?

Yes! Lots of room for beasties!

And yes, spells and magic items are a "crunch" sort of thing. "Flavor" is more like descriptions of towns, crypts, places. Think of flavor as belonging to the Campaign setting, and crunch as something in the PFRPG line.

So, that means #8 needs more in the way of campaign setting articles. One thing that could be done is to look at the Inner Sea map, along the coasts and in the open seas, and note an interesting name of a place there...definitely a place that Paizo has NOT described, please.

For instance, the "Coast of Graves" of Osirion...what kind of cool place is THAT? What danger awaits explorers or adventurers there?? Or Spider Island at the southern tip of Qadira? And island infested with spiders?

I look at the Inner Sea maps and see hundreds of seeds for adventures. I would like to see some of you use them for a Wayfinder article.

I am working on 2 ideas for Realm Building. I somehow expected Wayfinder #7 to be nautical based and not a year one devotional. So I had written an article on shipboard leadership roles based on the kingdom leadership roles. Unfortunately (fortunate for me though), I submitted the article for Tattlebox #3 and they were printed there, so I am working on something different.

Submitting a thrice edited story as I post this thanks to the good folks over at pathfinderchronicler.net

Yep! Received them both, Caleb! Thanks!

So ... Any idea when art assignments for Wayfinder #8 will go out? I got a hankering to illustrate some portraits, and maybe some beasties.

Dark Archive

Hows the magazine going now? Any last minute things that you're looking for?

Got my rewrite back in to LPJr, so I'm turning my mind toward Wayfinder now. I have an archetype in the works.

Sovereign Court Wayfinder, PaizoCon Founder

Still need a little bit of everything! However, we look to be lacking:
Monsters for the Bestiary
Fluff material detailing places, organizations, NPCs of Golarion
Short fiction (750 words)
mini-games (dice, card games adapted to fit the setting)
Short side-trek articles (those 300 or so word ones)

Sovereign Court Wayfinder, PaizoCon Founder

Art assignments will probably start in early October, if I have articles that I KNOW I am accepting right away.

That said, I am starting to compile my list of artists to utilize, so if you'd like to be on that list, let me know ASAP!! (Send me a link to your online gallery or something, too! I need to see what you do, to help me with assignments!)

No, I'm not talking stat blocks and backstories. Open up RotRL#1. Go to the article on Sandpoint. See all the text on the Sandpoint townspeople? THAT.

We've had articles like this before. They are usually "Notable persons of X" with X being a town, an organization, a business, a church, etc. It gives brief descriptions of the NPCs, with (expert 2) or (diplomat 3) or (noble 5), indicating their NPC class.

What I'm asking for is the flavor text, the "fluff", describing Golarion, much like all of the text in the Inner Sea Guide. Article on the mechanics (the crunch) is great, but we need to have some variety here, some fiction, some flavor, some rules and stat blocks, some mini-games, and some side-trek adventures.

When I'm putting together an issue, I have a pie chart that shows me the proportions of types of articles. I strive to make those pieces of the pie as equal as possible. That makes a well-balanced issue that has something for EVERYONE.

That said, I really do encourage everyone considering submitting something to just go ahead and submit it. Sure, we might end up light on something, but I'd MUCH rather have a lot of articles to choose from, than not enough articles in total. So, while I appreciate people wanting to send in exactly what we want or need, I really don't want you to decide that because I didn't ask for the idea you want to write, you just won't send it in!

My only request is that the article you send in is ON THEME.
