Hello folks,
a rule question for you:
If a character marked a target for Smite Evil and at one time in the fight he needed Breath of Life, must he mark the target again?
And if the target needed Breath of Life, what happens then?
Basically: If the target dies and gets revived by "Breath of Life", what happens?
Thanks for answers!

Quoting from the Paladin rules (others may vary)...
The smite evil effect remains until the target of the smite is dead or the next time the paladin rests and regains her uses of this ability.
Unlike other spells that heal damage, breath of life can bring recently slain creatures back to life. If cast upon a creature that has died within 1 round, apply the healing from this spell to the creature. If the healed creature's hit point total is at a negative amount less than its Constitution score, it comes back to life and stabilizes at its new hit point total. If the creature's hit point total is at a negative amount equal to or greater than its Constitution score, the creature remains dead. Creatures brought back to life through breath of life gain a temporary negative level that lasts for 1 day.
If the target died in the meantime, even if called back by Breath of Life, the condition 'target of the smite is dead' came into effect, thus: End of smiting.
If, however, the target averted being slain by the use of Hero points, it technically never died to begin with, so the smite would still be active.

Yes. Once he dies he is a corpse, and corpses don't have special powers so the smite turns off just like his aura would.
Be careful with such argument. When you kill a wizard he becomes a corpse without spellcasting ability and yet, his spells with defined duration remain in effect. I'd say that this question would require additional thinking and research.
We might have need for a volunteer or two.

Smite Evil (Su): "The smite evil effect remains until the target of the smite is dead or the next time the paladin rests and regains her uses of this ability."
Is the target of the smite dead? No.
Did the paladin rest and regain her uses of smite? No.
Thus, the smite evil effect remains.

Hmm... this would lead to the corner case...
Pally: "Die, evil dragon!" *smites evil*
Dragon: *full attack*
Pally *dies*
Dragon *eats Pally*
- 150 years later -
Wizard: "According to my records, Sir Hugh the Smitemeister was killed and eaten by the very dragon we are trying to destroy"
Cleric: "We could use some help... True Resurrection!"
...and the freshly resurrected Paladin could continue with his smite from 150 years ago.

It should be :
'Did the target of the smite die ? Yes.'
Until the target of the smite is dead, seems pretty evident.

The target of the smite is the evil creature that the paladin is attacking.
It doesn't matter what happens to the paladin. If the target didn't die, and the paladin didn't rest and regain her smite, then the smite is still in effect.
The 150-year-old truly resurrected Paladin resuming his attacks on the smited evil dragon is not only rules legal, it's awesome.

Well, the OP posed two questions which might be confusing things here..
1) what happens if the paladin dies and gets revived ?
- by RAW nothing in my opinion, though I'd be fine if the GM ruled otherwise.
2) what happens if the target dies and gets revived ?
- the smite would end since the target died, it wouldn't automatically reactivate because the creature gets returned to the world of the living.
