Hello. This has been brought up before in a somewhat old thread *places a ward against thread necromancy on this link* link here.
Check that thread out and see arguments for both sides.
The argument for it is that it's essentially a spell of Cure Moderate Wounds, but just in liquid form.
The argument against is that potions are meant to be taken internally, not externally. Oils, meant for external application, generally take a full-round action to apply and it would cheapen oil use if you could just dump a potion on things.

One of my players smashed a potion of cure moderate wounds on an undead opponent. Would this actually do damage?
I ruled it did during the session to keep things moving along but haven't been able to determine if it is rules compliant.
Thanks for any help!
Potions must actually be consumed to take effect. Oils, however, produce their effects when smeared onto the target.
So the potion of CMW in your story would have had no effect. Had it been a oil of CMW instead, that would be a different situation.
See also this thread for the community's general response to this kind of creative thinking.
EDIT: All kinds of ninja'd. Funny how different the responses in this thread are compared to when it was brought up before.
