Disease

Rules Questions

Does a PC know they have a disease before the damage occurs (if the onset is 3 days, do I know immediately after being bit? a day after? two days? the night before I start feeling bad? Not until I take the damage?)

How do you identify the disease you have? A Heal check lets you treat it but doesn't say anything about identifying. Knowing something is generally a Knowledge skill - might it be a KS: Local (which tends to be humanoids). Do we make it KS:Religion since they deal with the healing so much? Is identifying part of treating and so it's a Heal check to identify it? How early in the process can you identify that you have a disease?

The knowlege check would be the same to identify the creature that inflicted you with the disease, as such a check, if high enough, would inform you of that creatures ability to inflict disease. If it was a spell inflicting the disease then its a spellcraft check to id the spell.

for example a knowledge religion check could inform you someone was diseased with mummy rot but would not help you identify a disease created by a spell.

I'd use Heal to identify symptoms before the onset time if a player was asking me the DM about it. DC set by the disease.

When I DM I usually just tell the player. Otherwise I am liable to forget who was infected...

Dark Archive

It can be rather tricky to keep track of all that at once, but from a GM's perspective I always have to keep written track of all of the poisons, diseases, curses, and their know/heal/spellcraft DC as well as the save DC.

Otherwise I'd lose track too quickly.
