Alright, I have a question about the Staff Magus that also has to do with rangers.
I'm aiming to get to Arcane Archer. Currently I have a level 5 Ranger focusing on archery, and I need an arcane class.
I have my eye on Staff Magus because I can try to get Bowstaff cast permanently on my longbow, giving him both a melee and ranged weapon. Staff Magus seems like a good multiclass option for getting into Arcane Archer, so I have some melee in case an opponent gets too close.
My question is, it says Staff Magus is only able to use simple weapons. A longbow is martial ranged. Because a ranger is proficient in longbow, would that cancel that out? Also, would the Martial Weapon Proficiency feat work if the longbow proficiency doesn't cancel out the Staff magus simple weapon proficiency?
Thanks for the help in advance! A bit more about my ranger if it helps:
Half-Elf Male, worships Erastil
Combat style- Archery
Feats: Point Blank, Weapon Focus-Longbow (waiting for feedback to figure out fifth level feat, if not Martial Weapon Proficiency then I'd go Bullseye Shot, but suggestions are welcome!)
Combat Style Feat: Precise Shot (looking at Improved Precise Shot for sixth level)
My plan is to go six levels of Ranger, one level Staff Magus, then Arcane Archer.

A staff magus is proficient with simple weapons only. This means the only weapon proficiencies you get when taking a level of staff magus are simple weapons. Like all classes, proficiencies you acquire from other sources still work normally.
