Intensified Spell (Metamagic)

Your spells can go beyond several normal limitations.

Benefit: An intensified spell increases the maximum number of damage dice by 5 levels. You must actually have sufficient caster levels to surpass the maximum in order to benefit from this feat. No other variables of the spell are affected, and spells that inflict damage that is not modified by caster level are not affected by this feat. An intensified spell uses up a spell slot one level higher than the spell's actual level.

So for spells like Shocking Grasp and Fireball that give you one die of damage per caster level, this is pretty obvious. Instead of maxing at 5d6 damage, Shocking Grasp maxes at 10d6, though you still only get as many dice as you have caster levels (ie 7d6 damage at level 7).

But what about spells that aren't one die per level? Would this let you fire more Magic Missiles or Scorching Rays in a single casting?

What about Ear-Piercing Scream from Ultimate Magic, which does 1d6 damage per two caster levels to a max of 5d6? Would that now max at 10d6 (5 extra dice), or at 7d6 (5 extra caster levels would be 15th level)?

It will not work with spells like Magic Missile and Scorching Ray. The feat specifically increases the number of damage dice. The damage of Magic Missile and Scorching ray is fixed, it does not scale with level. Instead, you just get more missiles/rays. That means that Intensify Spell would be useless for those kind of spells.

The feat increases damage dice by 5 levels. So 7d6.

I disagree with you, the feat says "An intensified spell increases the maximum number of damage dice by 5 levels."

Damage dice, not "levels when counting toward damage dice".

This means that in the case of Ear-piercing Scream, you could get up to 10d6 at 20th level, since normally it's a max of 5 dice, but now the max would be 10 dice.

Damage dice by 5 LEVELS. Not +5 damage dice.

Yeah, I kinda had that feeling about Scorching Ray and Magic Missile. I'm still not sure which side I agree with when it comes to the extra damage die every two level spells like Ear-Piercing Scream. That could have been worded more clearly.
