I tried giving the Broodmaster a chance, I really did...

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

As someone who has played every other version of a summoner - and with great success - I really wanted to make the Broodmaster work. I tried several different builds, but at the end of the day, 2 small gimped ediolons until 8th level was too much - and to have them out you give up Monster Summoning? I couldn't even make them work as skill monkeys.

I really did try though.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Did you try setting up the entire team with teamwork feats?

Those can get pretty nasty when well coordinated and would fit with the theme of the summoner

coordinated maneuvers, Tandem Trip?

Give them the trip ability for 2 points. That nice +4 to cmb is epic since they're small and almost everything will be larger than them. Then you get to perpetually roll 2 x for the trip on their bite and take the higher roll

Edit: aka pack of wolves. Just realized :P. you're making a pack of wolves here. Specialize in putting creatures bigger than them on their backs by working together. You specialize in group support. Heck a bard and a brood master wouldn't be a bad combo

The only resourse you really get out of more weaker Ediolons is actions. So focus on using as many actions as possible. You can also have them swarm a single enemy aiding eachother, or have them all aid you so you can stuff. They can be used as effective distractions and should make great scouts. They can work together man heavy equipment such as ships, wagons turned into DaVinci Tanks, or seige equipment.

However I wouldn't say they would be effective if you were trying to use them in any traditional way.

All I finally came up with was a Summoner who played like a Rogue - took a level of Bard and masqueraded as a street performer while casing a place... his 'brood' were skill monkeys who helped him pull of his heists. Might make for an interesting NPC but that's about it imo.

I feel sad you didn't even respond to my comment :(

Um, no you don't. You still retain your Summon monster spell like abilities.

But you can't use it, just as a normal Summoner can't use it when his eidolon is out... in other words 'to have them out you have to give up Monster Summoning'.

Considering how low their CMB will be, how easy to kill they would be, the fact that I have to split up thier feats and evolution points, if I wanted to make a character who could trip I could do much better with another class. Spending so much energy in the hopes of being able to do something half as well as someone else kind of proves my point about the Broodmaster.

Now, I could see at 8th level making one a flying scout, making one a little skill monkey and then making the medium one into a bodyguard and flank buddy... but even then that's nto as effective as simply being able to spam Summon Monster or having a real Large-sized combat-capable Eidolon.
