Massive Weapons (Ex)

At 3rd level, a titan mauler becomes skilled in the use of massive weapons looted from her titanic foes. The attack roll penalty for using weapons too large for her size is reduced by 1, and this reduction increases by 1 for every three levels beyond 3rd (to a minimum of 0).
This ability replaces trap sense.

As written, all this does is grant characters the ability to use a +1 size (Small->Medium, Medium->Large) 1-handed weapon two-handed with no penalty at level 6, or a +2 size (Small->Large, Medium->Huge) light weapon two-handed with no penalty at level 9.

Is this the intent, or are Titan Maulers supposed to be able to ignore the limitations (but not the penalties) on using larger weapons?

Just to reproduce my post from elsewhere:

From what I understand the Titan Mauler cannot use a Greatsword sized for a large creature because they never included the wording for that ability. The Massive weapons ability gets around the first bolded section (see spoiler) but not the second bolded section (see spoiler).

Spoiler:

Inappropriately Sized Weapons: A creature can't make optimum use of a weapon that isn't properly sized for it. A cumulative –2 penalty applies on attack rolls for each size category of difference between the size of its intended wielder and the size of its actual wielder. If the creature isn't proficient with the weapon, a –4 nonproficiency penalty also applies.

The measure of how much effort it takes to use a weapon (whether the weapon is designated as a light, one-handed, or two-handed weapon for a particular wielder) is altered by one step for each size category of difference between the wielder's size and the size of the creature for which the weapon was designed. For example, a Small creature would wield a Medium one-handed weapon as a two-handed weapon. If a weapon's designation would be changed to something other than light, one-handed, or two-handed by this alteration, the creature can't wield the weapon at all.

It is my belief that they intended for the Titan Mauler to use a 2handed weapon sized for a large creature but failed to include the wording to exempt them from the second bolded section.

There's another thread on this elsewhere (probably more than one) where I clarify that my authorial intent is that a titan mauler should be able to use ginormous weapons, but the wording of the RAW version doesn't exactly support that.

Search my name and 'titan mauler' in the messageboards and you should find it, as well as some suggested fixes or rewordings or clarifications.

Jason, thanks for the response (and for the archetype!). I'm just hoping to get an official ruling on it, since I currently only play PFS, and am therefore beholden to the RAW.

For RAW/PFS you're stuck with the FAQ.

For home games, here's Jason's Fixed version.

Thanks Jason, unfortunately until a FAQ comes out those who follow the RAW closely (such as PFS) will continue to have a problem. - Gauss

Has anyone tested Jason's revised version of Massive Weapons in a home game to see if it leads to any kind of imbalance? I suspect the main reason it's never been addressed is concern that allowing it as intended will create more problems than it solves. Just wondering if there's any (anecdotal) evidence pointing one way or the other.
