Adopted Trait

So here's a stupid question. RAW the adopted trait doesn't say you can't. So aside from common sense why can't you take half-elf as the adopted parents or human for a half-elf character and take the +2 ability adjustment? It is listed under the racial traits. Unless the online PRD is shortened. I don't have the book in front of me.

Racial traits in the Race chapter aren't racial traits as far as traits are concerned in the APG.

The naming is confusing, but keep in mind that Race Trait is not the same as Racial Trait. The Adopted trait let you pick a trait from another race's list of Race Traits (in the trait section of the book.) It does not refer to racial traits you receive from being a member of that race (eg. low-light vision)

I guess you have to differentiate traits you're born with and acquired traits. For example, the dwarf gets (apart from the ability bonuses) darkvision and slow and steady, which are genetic traits. OTOH hatred and greed origin in the upbringing and thus could be counted as racial traits you could pick when you're adopted.

race traits are traits you CAN take if you are of a specific race. Most of them are found in the different pathfinder splash books (elves of Golarion, dwarves of Golarion, etc)

racial traits are the tings that are listed under the entry for the race in the core rule book, like darkvision and hatred for dwarves. you CANNOT take these traits if you are not of that race, and you always have them if you are of that race (except for when you take one or more of the alternate racial traits as written in the races section of the APG)

Although the names are similar, they are in fact to completely diffirent things and are not interchangeable

Traits: Five categories of 'half-feats' tied to your character background.

Race Traits: One category of trait, keyed to specific races or ethnicities.

Racial Traits: Abilities most members of a race get as part of being that race, including things like Darkvision, Orc Blood, and Halfling Luck.

Adopted: "You were adopted and raised by someone not of your actual race, and raised in a society not your own. As a result, you picked up a race trait from your adoptive parents and society, and may immediately select a race trait from your adoptive parents' race."

Adopted, which is a Social Trait, grants you one Race Trait, which is a trait from the Race category of traits. It does not grant you a racial trait.

In some books, Race Traits were labeled "racial traits" which confuses the issue.

In any case, any of the default abilities listed in the Races chapter of the CRB, or the alternate racial traits from the races chapter of the APG, are not valid with Adopted.

I'll correct myself:

hatred and greed origin in the upbringing and thus could be counted as race traits you could pick when you're adopted.

Gamewise, they grant bonuses similar to the race traits in APG.

Strictly as a houserule, yes.

I am a human I took adopted that means my mother was a halfling So then I took the Freedom fighter Trait and got escape artist as a class skill.

Incorrect. See Grick's post for details.

Of course.

Easiest way to remember is that there are Race traits, and there are Racial traits. These two are very different things.
