Tumor Familiar + Improved Familiar Feat

Rules Questions

Shadow Lodge

Is it okay for Alchemists to use tumor familiar discovery with improved familiar? The tumor familiar gets the same abilities as the creature it is based on, so what would occur when using an imp, brownie, homunculus? Would this be possible?

Um, ew. I would guess so. There doesn't seem to be anything that prohibits it. One could argue that it does only say "animals" not outsiders, dragons, elementals, or whatever you plan on getting with the improved familiar feat, but that's pretty circumstantial. This is neither powerful nor abusive, so most DMs wouldn't have a problem with it. To be certain you can do it, ask your DM.

See point 5.

Thank you. I will be using a brownie, or homunculus as my improved familiar for alchemist. I also am wondering if my DM will allow the creation of a homunculus with alchemy. That's how Roger was created in Hellboy. Other fantasies seem to have had creation of the homunculus via alchemy (full metal alchemist) He is a very fair DM, so I might get lucky.

Grand Lodge

Homunculus is the better choice. Check out construct modifications, as you can have a knife-handed flying baby of doom, that you can wear as a shield.
