Lightening bolt

Rules Questions

So our sorcerer found himself caught up in a whirlwind. He casts lightening bolt, does it damage him as well as the whirlwind?

Scarab Sages

Only if he put himself inside the area of effect.

Edit: I should add that if the elemental is large enough, it could be affected by the lightning bolt without the caster being inside the area.

No. (Though he likely needs to make a Concentration check to be able to cast it at all.)

Well, he was more or less co-located with the whirlwind,so I would say he was in the area of effect.

well... considering that the lighting bolt comes out from his fingertips...

The only way for a caster to be affected by his own lightning bolt is if someone reflects it back at him (via things like Spell Turning), or if he puts his finger to his own head and shoots himself with it.

By RAW, there's no way to hit a creature in your own square with a lightning bolt, is there?

Must remember that when a horde of diminutive creatures shows up.

Edit: Barring spell turning or other similar effects.

Aiming at your feet ought to do the trick.

Not sure how you draw a line from one corner of your square away from you through your feet.

Always have pre-cast papers with Explosive Runes. Recently my GM thought he was clever and would surprise us with 5 or 6 swarms of crows. They got the surprise on us, and they started gouging out the parties eyes. I cast fireball at my feet, and dropped half the swarms, then used my move action to pull out one of my papers, and a swift/free action to begin reading it. 15d6 points of damage to the swarms who take an extra 50% for against area effects.

You want to be heavier in a whirlwind, not lighter...

Grand Lodge

Is he using his spell packet?

Having it start at the top right back corner of your cube, and having it travel to the bottom left front corner of your cube ought to do it.

Effectively, you raise your arm as high over your head as you can get it, then you point down towards yourself. With a little luck (unluck?) you will only effect your square.

That's not really "away from you" though.

"A line-shaped spell shoots away from you in a line in the direction you designate. It starts from any corner of your square and extends to the limit of its range or until it strikes a barrier that blocks line of effect. A line-shaped spell affects all creatures in squares through which the line passes."

I would probably allow it anyway, because it's cool to blast yourself.

Or you would just 5 foot step then cast the spell through the space you were just in.

Whirlwind (Su): "Creatures trapped in the whirlwind cannot move except to go where the whirlwind carries them or to escape the whirlwind."

If you don't fly, you don't get a save each round to escape.

However, the whirlwind is at minimum 10 feet high, so shooting the lighting bolt straight up might be a good idea.

That should work, picking an upper corner of your "cube" and pointing it straight up.
