Ranger's Favored enemy dispute

Favored Enemy might have started as Hatred in eariler editions but for Pathfinder it is just knowing your enemy well so it is not hating your own race. Also there is no reason not to choose one of the most numerous creatures on the planet, humans. The attack and damage bonuses are focused on mostly but there are the skill bonuses as well and who wouldn't want an extra +2 or more Bluff, Perception, and Sense Motive for an entire city of humans?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Favored Enemy simply means you are have taken the time to study a particular type of foe. Quite often it is due to hatred or dislike of the foe, but that does not have to be the case. If your character is a sheriff or bounty hunter than taking your own race as a favored enemy makes perfect sense. Rangers make very good cops.

I like picking a common choice that applies to a lot of different enemies, like undead, and then focus more with each choice after that. But don't necessarily pick ones that are too common with your later choices, since you can use Instant Enemy for your largest bonus against cratures that aren't your favored enemies.

I rather like the freebooter archtype for this. Just point at a guy and say "let's murder that guy" and gain a decent bonus, group wide, as a free action. With no real duration to run out.

It is actually a lot of fun.

Favored ENEMY should, IMO, be a creature type the PC has a particularly reason to despise, or see as their primary foe.

Nope. Unless my dwarven ranger/wizard had humans as his 'primary foe' as ambassador from the Five Kings Mountains.

I could have sworn both of the freebooters abilities were move actions.

I generally prefer player to have a valid reason to pick there FE vs it gives the most bonus to the most situations and if they come up with a reason that should IMHO also provide them penalties to social skills when dealing with there FE then I enforce that as well.

I could have sworn I'd typed move!

I'm remembering some advice I think from the 3.X softback supplement for rangers and rogues.

Paraphrased: Humans, Evil Outsiders, and Dragons can be encountered frequently at nearly any point in an adventurer's career. Undead and Magical Beast also have a very broad range of CRs but tend to taper off at the higher levels.

Scarab Sages

Hmm...did some searches on specific favored enemy related feats:

Giant-bane Caster (favored enemy Giant)

Indigestible (favored enemy Oozes)

Hunter of Dahak (favored enemy Dragons)

Robot's Bane (favored enemy Constructs)

And Prestige Classes:

Skyseeker (favored enemy Giant, Orc, or Goblin)

Lantern Bearer (favored enemy aberration, animal, fey, humanoid (elf ), outsider (evil), and plant)
