Paladin or Sohei Monk?

As I stated in this thread, I'm interested in making a tiefling follower of Irori who seeks to transcend the taint in his blood. And I can't decide whether to make this character a paladin of Irori or use the Sohei archetype for the monk. What's the best way to build either of them? Skills, feats, etc? Should I multiclass and take both like that character in Jade Regent's Tide of Honor module?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

If you're going to use a weapon anyway, go Paladin. It's a better choice mechanically, and at least as cool thematically. Don't dump Wis or Dex entirely, and maybe eventually grab some Monk to take the Paladin of Irori Prestige Class when it comes out.

What are solid builds for paladins, then?

I disagree. Sohei is one of the best switch-hitting classes in the game. You've got enough feats that you can split between Ranged (A Shortbow on horseback, with flurry to do all the Rapid Shot and Multishot things you'd normally do), Melee (Power Attack, and then just Flurry away), and Mounted Combat (Take a Lance, take all your Mounted Combat Bonus Feats, murder everything.)

Just remember to take Weapon Training for the things you want to flurry with, and at level 12, you can switch hit with a Lance and a Shortbow, while on horseback, and destroy damn near everything.

Just make it a point to ignore the current mess with Flurry of Blows, and you should be fine. :D

This would be primarily urban though (Council of Thieves), so a mount is more of a liability.

I played a paladin in CoT and there was no shortage of things to smite.

i would say sohei and ignore the idiotic rules clerification people are discussing on this board. sohei is a very fun character to play. imagin a monk with a great sword flurrying (sohei/fighter) or with a glave, spear , bow, cross bow, pretty much what ever you think would be cool flavor wise.

a paladin is a paladin, but a sohei monk can be a lot of different things.

I know there's a lot of things to smite in Council of Thieves. I'm referring to the mount both paladins and sohei get bonuses to using. You're often in enclosed and potentially very tight spaces where a horse won't fit. Weapon Bond is easily the better choice for the AP in the case of the paladin. Mounts work better in APs were there's a lot of open space to use them, the best example I can think of being Kingmaker.
