If the PC has his gear, will it still be where it was and unharmed when he uses elemental body I on himself? Will it merge into his body similar to an alter self spell? If the gear stays put where it's at, and the body of the PC merely becomes fire, I am wondering if the items he wears are harmed or if they may catch fire; even perhaps having a sword be on fire and giving fire damage on attacks...

metal melts at differnt temps.
wood and paper burns.
if the spell does not say and the elemental part does not say and if he turns into a efriti and not the fire elemental that is contantly aflame( both are fire elementals) I'd say no, but if its the contant aflame elemental than I'd say yes.
but it would all be house ruled at that point.

I'd also like to point out that the genie types such as the efritti, genie etc... are not the stnadard elemental, they are element based outsiders..... so.....ummmm is this the spell that was in magic of golarion???? or whatever that book was???
anyhoo... the spell doesnt say over at the pathfinder srd....
so I'd house rule it since it seems to assume the always aflame fire elemental......

Small Fire elemental does 1d4 fire damage on it's burn special ability,
this is stated as attacking in melee or being attacked but common sense suggests touching somthing would cause damage. However items take 1/2 damage from fire and hardness applies so most* items wont take any damage at all from elemental body I.
