Of course.
They just have to swing it at someone every round they want the bonus.
the Defending property has been altered to require the user to actually use (not just hold) the weapon in order to get the bonus on any given round.

You can use any weapon regardless of proficiency. Not having proficiency doesn't mean you magically fumble it out of your hands every time you try and pick it up (this is not a video game!), but rather that you take a penalty to attack rolls. That's it. Nothing more.
