Shadow Dancer shadow familiar

Advice

Looking at taking Shadow Dancer Prc for rogue/fighter character. Im looking for advice on how to build the Shadow up to provide assistance in combat and opportunities to be able to gather info for my pc. So, would giving it special equipment, magic items and armor and weapons be possible? If so, how and what?? Also, what about feats and skills to take to help my pc better utilize the shadow?

Thanks

Not certain about the shadow specifically, but if you're going Shadowdancer, you might consider using one of your Rogue Talents on Minor Magic: Dancing Shadows. http://bit.ly/x2Oyjj It acts like Dancing Lights but reduces light levels instead of illuminating. Very handy for fighting during the day, though if you're in direct sunlight it won't help you.

the shadow could wield ghost though weapons or wear similar armour but it has no proficiency. really just let it flank for you and do str damage to your enemies.

You can use spells to enhance your shadow to some extent. A wand of mage armor should work, maybe a wand of heroism also. A wand of inflict light wounds (or maybe infernal healing) would be on the must buy list.

The biggest problem with the shadow is likely going to be hit points. I'm not sure how to best build that up shy of increasing the shadowdancer's hit points. This will be particularly bad at higher levels as more and more creatures will be able to hit the shadows low AC and can damage incorporeal.

What about Ion stones, or magic rings etc.. can those be made ghost touch so they can be used by a shadow? Any thoughts on using feats or being able to advance the shadow like a familiar/animal companion?

Thanks

If it were me I'd be willing to give you Evolved Familiar (or something similar) but that's a house rule, as the RAW seems to go out of it's way to NOT refer to your shadow in terms of a familiar or animal companion. You might be able to get away with using the Augment Summons feat, and others like Moonlight Summons, that give a boost your summoned creatures. But with Moonlight Summons and a few others you're giving up you're shadow's stealth abilities.

Giving it Ghost Touch armor or weapons will depend on the GM, as shadows have no armor or weapon feats. Again, I'd be OK with armor, though I might want you to give said equipment the Shadow ability as well.

I posted a fighter/shadowdancer build here.

Using rogue to enter into sadowdancer seems to be natural at first, but I feel it is rather a trap. Full BAB classes are better suited for it and you do not lose things like sneak attack progression :-)

I'm not sure, but an Ioun stone might work with an in corporeal creature.

One thing to keep in mind, there are a lot of advantages to being completely incorporeal (moving through walls/ floors/ etc) and as soon as you start adding ghost touch stuff to them they have corporeal things attached to them and can no longer do the neat stuff incorporeal critters are good at.

Giving Ghost Touch to an item makes it incorporeal when worn by an incorporeal creature.

Would Leadership work for your Shadow? Giving it class levels would be cool, I'm unsure of the mechanics. Maybe house rule it.

Hmm... reading the weapon description it isn't very clear, but in the armor description it is. You are right.

Hey guys. I've been playing a ranger for a while now and was thinking about going shadowdancer. The question is my animal companion. I was never sure about the whole animal companion/summon shadow combo since you can only use one creature in the society.

Sczarni

My shadow uses a +1 menacing ghost touch sword. His flank bonus then goes up to +4. I never attacked with the sword.

Kensai shadowdancer worked well for me as I needed uncanny dodge (most of my ac is gone if flatfooted)

I used the shadow for gathering info through doors and thin walls. He was good in tandem with Lefty's shadow to drain strength off major foes.

@Aridul: you can have only one combat "pet". So ranger-shadowdancer is indeed redundant.
