So looking for some help here. The long and short of it is that I'm planning on having some protean inklings that will be showing up later in the campaign and remembered a reference to the proteans as working in chorus's. That being said I've been wanting to find a good musical cue to signify their approach that my PC's can start to associate with the lords of primal chaos and I would love to know if you guys have found anything that would really work for them. A few qualifiers beforehand though. First if it could be something that is/sounds like a chorus or brings on those same kind of mental analogies that would be preferred. Second it needs to be something i can also talk over and run in the background while the characters talk setting the mood for the scenes. Now lastly I would love one that kind of gives off a curious vibe, the proteans are sort of discovering something of the parties and are not quite sure how to react/handle quite yet but are chomping at the bit to investigate and the PC's are getting an inside look in the this chorus's discussion on the topic and I would like to have something that echo's that vibe of "unsure curiosity" if that makes any sense at all.

Or something that pulls a lot of play then distort kind of stuff. One example is something like the Chemical Brothers song "Where Do I Begin" where you can hear both the instrument proper then hear it get played back distorted or like when you hear a record play and suddenly it's in reverse you know? It creates a great vibe where your ear is both familiar with the sound but at the same time thrown off. Hopefully that makes sense to somebody.

Cool. Will say really liking the lightning bolt thematically with all the distortion and whatnot but do you know if there is anything that is a bit less aggressive then that? I can say some certainty I will probably use some of there stuff for combat or something but right now I would want something a bit more mello. Know anything like that?

That whole scene is really crazed, but if you want to use distortion thematically for proteans then maybe pelican would do. It doesn't have the same chaos to the sound though.
Maybe Angel Eyes?

Try something like this, it's the first song that popped in my head with your question Painkiller Introduction

I don't think that any real-world music, as distorted as it may sound, will work. All of the examples here would be more lawful than chaotic in game terms, because they are very structured. (Except maybe for Free Jazz, because that stuff contains more improvisation than most styles.)
If you want music to represent the pure chaos that is a Protean, I guess you are out of luck. I'd say their music would randomly switch between styles; from death metal to classic to folk to rap and so on.

yeah but by that logic they couldn't be represented at all really they are beings of pure chaos that have infinite lifespans, are as mutable as water, and older then much of the known universe so they really couldn't be represented by much of anything in any format. But that isn't really that helpful to anyone nor in the spirit of the post. I like the idea of normal music taken and distorted cause it takes what is normal and we expect to hear and turns it on it's head which to me is what I think of when I think of proteans. They are a species that is in a constant state of flux perpetually changing and shaping the world around them to fit their mercurial whims into beautiful if totally foreign things and I think that would leave a person awestruck and a little bit afraid maybe like how the explorers in mountains of madness felt the first time they lay eyes on the foreboding hills, they are beautiful and awe inspiring but ominous and foreboding at the same time.

It may be Pokemon music, but how about N's Playroom
I find it creepy as hell, but also pretty subtle if you keep it quiet. And I think you can find looped versions of it on youtube.

Thinking about it, Igorrr may be the most chaotic music I've heard.
Now that is perfect.

Ehh I've been iffy to throw dubstep into the mix with them thus far. It has the bad habit of being very well known in my group of pc's and is most often not favored. I also feel like a lot of it ends up sounding too similar and therefore throws off the oddity/unease vibe I'm looking for. Like the igorr stuff (especially the chopin one) but still a little off too many portions that end up over and very fast and aggro for what I am looking for might use it later though for something like a formal meeting with them though. But yeah back to the point love what we have so far but looking for something a bit less aggressive want something that seems weird and off putting because of the juxtaposition of musics rather then from the noise level/aggression it is trying to convey.
P.S. With you Todd the Proteans are probably one of the most interesting outsiders and are just dying to get a more through look over then what we have thus far. You wouldn't happen to know if we will be getting any more in the near future?

I'd love to do more with them, a lot more. But obviously if there was more in the future that I knew of, I wouldn't be able to tell you one way or the other. :)

Drat. Well just putting it out there I would love to see the proteans get more coverage especially more different proteans to fill up my encounters (hell I wish all the neutral outsiders would get more support now that we have all the evil guys well covered). I really can't wait to till my players get to interact with them more especially through things like planar ally or binding. I've always pictured this massive protean showing up and what it asks for is something it hasn't seen before that is original and unique and would love to see a party play this out.
P.S. Loved your work on the daemons, suffice it to say they will be showing up in game pretty soon as well and I can't wait to see how they handle them.
