My natural cynicism to fan-game releases has been overcome by the fact that it's a Wing Commander game. Sure, it looks a bit rough around the edges from the trailer, but what the heck... it's a Wing Commander game...
They don't make those anymore...
Please pardon me while my nostalgia runs in circles screaming "WOOOOOOOOoooooooooo!" for the next couple of minutes.

Oh dear lord. A Wing Commander game using an updated FS2 engine? Fan projects are so awful, but there's no way I'll be able to justify not trying this.
I swear, someone needs to bring the space flight sim genre back with some modern design sensibilities and a decent budget. The last great was FS2, thirteen years ago. The genre has been essentially untouched since. There is so much room for improvement.

Do you not like game mods in general, or just fan development projects where they work to create something from scratch?
I agree with you about the lack of good space opera flight sims. I can't remember the last good game in the genre.

Fan projects have an overwhelming tendency to over-promise and massively under-deliver (I myself am guilty of this). There really is a huge difference between working on something in one's free, leisure time, and having an entire professional development studio at work on a project.
