Magus as a thrower?

Advice

would a magus be good to use as a thrower? im thinking of grabing the feat throw anything.

Well anyone can be a good thrower...but as per the Spellstrike class feature and the accompanied FAQ/Errata with it, the charge can only be delivered via a weapon held...once you throw it, you can no longer use it to deliver your touch spell. So why would you try to be a specialized thrower as a magus? Not sure the real benifit for it.

Well, the Myrmidarch Magus from UC can spellstrike with a ranged weapon.

Ranged Spellstrike (Su): At 4th level, a myrmidarch can use spellstrike to cast a single-target touch attack ranged spell and deliver it through a ranged weapon attack. Even if the spell can normally affect multiple targets, only a single missile, ray, or effect accompanies the attack.

At 11th level, a myrmidarch using a multiple-target spell with this ability may deliver one ray or line of effect with each attack when using a full-attack action, up to the maximum allowed by the spell (in the case of ray effects). Any effects not used in the round the spell is cast are lost. This ability replaces spell recall and improved
spell recall.

Additionally, since most thrown weapons would also count as as lisht or one-handed melee weapons, Spell Combat would be largely unaffected.

thats wat i thought of quantum

My bad, OP only said magus so was going with a stock version. I have seen several try a vanilla that way and are disappointed when they figure out they needed Myrmudarch.

Just remember that the Myrmidarch archetype has ranged spell strike, but not ranged spell combat. That means you still would only be able to use a single attack with a standard action spell. You would not be able to combine ranged spell strike with spell combat for a full attack and a spell.

hmm i didnt know that

kinda wish there was a different way to get range spell strike with out the Myrmidarch i personaly dont like it

1 person marked this as a favorite.

spell combat should work with ranged spell strike however youd have to specify that you were casting the spell first and putting it in the weapon before throwing it also im fairly certain youd need to use a dagger or something that counts as both a range weapon and a melee weapon but of course its all up to the GM at the end of the day if they allow some rules to be broken

Weird idea: Snag Net wielding Magus with the Net and Trident feat, and various other net feats.
Being a touch attack, the Snag Net offers some interesting options.

Can a myrmidarch deliver a spell (via ranged spellstrike) when throwing a splash weapon? It is a ranged weapon attack after all.

If it works will the spell trigger before or after the weapon damage occurs?

That's because you're already casting from ranged spell strike.

I'm suprised you haven't read the lvl 11 upgrade that's been posted itt several times already.
