So as a Ranger I get certain abilities such as Camouflage and Hide in Plain sight, which effectively give me the ability to disappear when I'm in one of my favored terrains. My question is whether or not I can be in a favored terrain where I can essentially vanish and still be under the effects of stealth?
So, I have +30 stealth checks (cause of high dex, equipment, etc for instance) and roll a 15 on the die, 45 total. I use a smoke arrow to conceal a 5 foot square where I'm standing and effectively vanish from the sight of the enemy. I get an extra +4 because we're in the city[urban] for a total of 49 all together. I now fly up 10 feet... I am technically still in my favored terrain (for all intensive purposes) and still have to ability to hide WITHOUT ANY cover or concealment what so ever. What would be the general consensus on this?
Is 10ft in the air still "city," or is it a different terrain?
How high up does the city go?
I would say that 10' up is still below the rooftops of most houses, so you'd definitely still be in the city, so Camouflage would still work the same.
If you are asking are you still considered to be in your favored terrain even when flying above it the answer is yes.
@Quantum - I guess it's just like: "You're in a sewer that is completely enclosed, the roof is 50ft up and the tunnel is 30ft wide." If I fly up to 25ft and am hovering in the middle of the room am I still under the effects of a stealth roll.
@Wraithstrike - It's not necessarily whether I'm still in my favored terrain, it's "Do I get the effects of being able to stealth in the air, while in said favored terrain under the rules of Camouflage?"
Yes. As long as you are in the terrian you get the bonus. Being on the ground is not a requirement.
Well, you definitely keep the favored terrain bonus, the question is, can you stealth while flying? And can you Hide in Plain Sight while flying?
Eh... Yes to the first, Maybe to the second. You can definitely fly stealthily; owls can, for one. But they stealth at night, taking advantage of concealment. So can you Hide in Plain Sight while flying? Probably not; just crouching on the ground would make you stealthy, but having to hover and be stealthy, all without cover? I could see a GM going either way on it.
Why not? I don't see any rules or precedent going against it. I am sure if I check the book I can find a flying monster with ranks in stealth.
The whole point of HiPS is that it lets you hide without cover or concealment -- that is, hide in places/situations where normal creatures can't hide.
So, yes, I think it's perfectly fine.
