RAW
A dagger is a dagger and a longsword is a longsword. Deitys have a favored weapon , not a favored weapon group.
You can talk with your GM and maybe he will allow a punching dagger or something similar if you have a good idea / story. Its not OP if you use a dagger like weapon .. i would allow it (if you have a good story/background for this exception from RAW).

I have some respect for Paizo giving some gods weapon proficiencies that are useless because it shows an emphasis on story over almighty balance. But I feel clerics with a useless favored weapon should get skill focus or some more class skills for their trouble.
Granted I'm playing a Cleric of Sheyln who will use his glaive as a flagpole.

You can houserule that a cleric gets the feat weapon focus "fav. weapon" for free if he already has the profiency with the weapon via the cleric class feature.

Trait: River Rat, for +1 to damage and weapon focus.
Seriously, get a morningstar or a mace.
I am going to have a morning star for those pesky skeletons, but that still sorta defeats the point of using the deity's favored weapon. I just wish that out side of playing a rogue, daggers had more usability.

Any one weapon is going to be less useful against some type of foe or another, and since no god grants more than one favored weapon, you are not going to get away from this problem. As far as the damage potential of a dagger, yeah it is lower damage than most other weapons - that didn't stop me from creating a dagger-specialist fighter because I love the flavor of it.

As a cleric of Pharasma, you should take advantage of the possibility of channeling two types. You will do much better at handling undead with channel, than a dagger.
I was actually looking into the idea of using versatile channeler, and channel smite to offset the lack of damage. Sure they get a will save for half. Factoring in my stats, my math comes to 1d4-1 +1d6 negative at 1st lvl.
ps built at 15 points. Stats are str 8, dex 10, con 10, int 10, wis 16, cha 16
pss Human.

OK my next question, is what can I do make the dagger a viable weapon as a cleric?
If your diety favors a dagger, It's probably not a diety that's known for martial clerics. In this case, you should probably focus on being a caster. Otherwise enchant it as much as possible, and remember that you still have simple weapon proficiency so you can just wear a dagger for show and go mace happy.

Your stats scream spellcasting. You should not get your character focused on melee of any kind. A few good channel feats, and most of your money should be put forth toward defense. A good shield and armor is much better for you that weapons. Metamagic rods later on.
They do, I still want to have some versatility, after all sometimes spell casting isn't in the cards. It has been my experience that you always run out of spells at the worst time. Higher lvls not so much, but this character is being made at 1st.
