In the latest guide to organized play under death it says
PCs who die during a scenario and are raised receive full XP for that scenario, so long as they completed at least three encounters.
The bolded part use to say "As long as you have participated in three encounters". So I'm wondering why was it changed? Were people abusing this or taking advantage of it somehow? Because if you happen to die during the 3rd encounter it's like too bad for you, you get nothing.

All I can say is... "Kyle" happens then you die.

a 5 star GM with a reputation for being a Killer... he's Kyle Baird, He's Kyle Baird....
but in a more serious light, the 'you must complete 3 encounters to get XP' has been around since the 3.5 days, it's not new to the most recent version of the guide. If you died without competing 3 encounters your charater did not get enough experience to gain a XP. Kinda like the Rouge who got a full attack critical from a manticore in the face going from full to -35 in the surprise round this month... it was the second encounter... at least we went back for his body after to bring him back to town...

Doesn't rouge belong on the face anyway? Though a critical application of rouge on the face from a manticore might not go over well.
Has the manticore gone to beauty school?

Regardless of death or having to leave early or running out of time or whatever, you have had to complete at least three encounters in order to earn XP since at least the beginning of Season 1. Maybe the specific text you are talking about was changed to bring it in line with the general rule and get rid of the loophole, if there was one.

Does the Q&A seesion with the venture captian count as one of those 3 encounters? Even if the players cannot think of anything to ask and it is not even a Q&A but just a briefing? I actually ran a game where only counting that did the player finish 3 encounters and gave him the benefit of the doubt but was not sure and failed to come ask about it till now. Something I find odd is that I recall at least in 3.5 they said you gained xp for any encounter you began. Even if you got turned to stone before your initiative was the example. I guess the abstract xp system of the society is why they want you to complete 3 enoucnters instead of just begin them? Or are we not to count stuff like when we have a chance to talk with someone but fail all the social skill rolls to obtain anything from the event?

Raymond,
Encounters are the five Acts of the scenario where you fight something or solve something. If you do not successfully complete at least three of these, you no XP.
godsDMit,
Right. But if you die and had earned the fame from your faction mission, and that point would put you at enough to buy a raise, then most GMs would be nice and let you do that at the end of the scenario so that you do not lose your character. The same with gold/treasure found during the scenario. If you are in town and have the capability to go to the Lodge in between acts to cash stuff in and that gives you or your party enough to pay for a raise, then that is generally allowed also.
