... can I use the Spell Creation rules to copy an existing spell from another class onto the list of another spellcaster ?

Say, I'm a wizard, and I want to get Timely Inspiration or Cure Light Wounds. How would you handle it if I, the Wizard, am ready to pay good money for this spell to become available ?

I don't think there are any official rules to cover this, but I'd say in the case of magic that's clearly not the casters thing ie healing magic for a wizard, should be a spell level or two higher at least. CLW 2nd or 3rd level spell for example. Wizards just aren't the healers clerics are.

This is a rules question and the rules make no allotment for that.

However, yes you can as there's no provision in there to the effect of "you can do this except where the spell would not be on your list" because no custom spell is going to be on anyone's list so who's list it's on or isn't on isn't a factor.

How would I handle it? recommend items of UMD, or a class level of bard/witch.

Per the rules, no go.

How is it a no go?

Independent Research: A wizard can also research a spell independently, duplicating an existing spell or creating an entirely new one. The cost to research a new spell, and the time required, are left up to GM discretion, but it should probably take at least 1 week and cost at least 1,000 gp per level of the spell to be researched. This should also require a number of Spellcraft and Knowledge (arcana) checks.

There's nothing in there requiring that the spell be on your list. If there were it would be useless as you could just buy the scroll and use that mechanic to learn the new spell.

Try not to assume every scroll is available everywhere, and try the thought process again.

Independent research allows a wizard to research spells that may be on his list, but he may be unable to find elsewhere. He can also attempt to create a new spell entirely, but thats up to DM discretion, as it says.

Also, look at it from a game balance perspective. A wizard could then learn every spell from every class list, and then having them on that list, use any spell trigger item containing those spells as well. It's certainly not RAI to allow that. Thats the domain of things like limited wish (which costs 1500GP PER casting)

Liberty's Edge

First off, here are the rules for Spell Research from the SRD.

You'll notice they mention this:

"Watch for spells that break the implied limits of the game. Most arcane casters have poor healing abilities, and divine spells rarely excel at direct damage. With rare exception, spells shouldn’t duplicate existing class features or feats."

Those are guidelines for GMs because, ultimately, it's your GM's decision to let your proposed spell fly or die. A GM might allow a little cross-pollination from one arcane list to another, one divine list to another or even divine to arcane, but there are some spells that they may feel are out of place on certain lists. If your wizard gets to successfully develop Cure magic, the GM's got to let any other wizard follow your precedent. Wizards might never be as good at healing as Clerics, but it might make a huge difference in the game world or even how players choose the class they're going to play.

Basically, hash the given rules out with your GM and get his input on what they'll allow.

And even if you develop Cure Light Wounds as, say, a 3rd level wizard spell, you can still use cheap cleric-crafted wands of it, so that's another balance concern (Although I suppose any GM allowing this in the first place could say that to be cast by an arcane caster it has become a completely different spell with a different name, even if it does the same thing, to prevent this)
