3.5 perestige classes to pathfinder

Advice

Lantern Lodge

I would like to use the 3.5 prestige classes to put into pathfinder.

I think the only thing i have to do is find out how to convert skill points into perception points like listen,spot,and so on. Or would i need to factor more into this change? I know that 3.5 character are a 1 CR lower than pathfinders but i am wondering if 3.5 prestige classes are weaker than pathfinders prestige classes also.

Some help on this will be greatly welcomed.

thanks

There were hundreds of Prestige Classes printed during 3.5. Some were super powerful and many were junk.

I think it would depend on which ones you wanted to convert--maybe with some specifics, help would come more easily.

Things to note for converting PrCs:

1. Make sure Hit dice and BAB are linked. Full BAB=d10 (or d12), 3/4 BAB=d8, 1/2 BAB=d6. There are no d4 hit dice in Pathfinder. For some PrCs, they'll get a boost and others will get a drop.

2. Do your skill consolidations as you say.
Acrobatics=Balance, Jump, Tumble (one thing that really irks me in conversion is classes that had Jump as a class skill do not get Acrobatics as a class skill in Pathfinder. That's a call I'd make for PrC conversion on a case by case basis).
Diplomacy=Diplomacy and Gather Information
Linguistics=Decipher Script, Forgery, and Speak Language
Perception=Listen, Search, Spot
Stealth=Hide, Move Silently

If a PrC loses a LOT of class skills from consolidation, I might add a few Knowledges or other skills IF they make sense for the class, to round them out.

3. PrC saving throw progression is different than in 3.x. What I'd do is look at a Pathfinder PrC with similar saves to the PrC you are converting and use those as a guidelines.

4. For all bonus feats, spells, and spell-like abilities, check the PRD to see how these feats have changed. Also I know some 3.x class abilities have analogous spells and abilities spread through Pathfinder. For example, I remember the Manual of the Planes had a lot of prestige classes that had a "craft demiplane" class ability. There is a similar spell in Ultimate Magic--compare/contrast to see how you'd want it to work.

As for the strength/weakness of 3.x Prestige Classes vs. Pathfinder ones... it REALLY depends on the individual class. Some will convert just fine. Some were broken in 3.x and would remain so now. Some were too weak and would remain so now. On this, all I can say is use your best judgment, and add or take away abilities as you see is necessary. I would say however some converted Prestige Classes would be better (by which I mean "playable and effective") than the Pathfinder PrCs in the APG at least, but then, I kind of have a serious hate-on for most of the APG PrCs.

This is totally a case by case basis. Some are easy, some are very difficult. You really should give some examples of what you are looking to convert. I also suggest scanning the conversion boards.

Also, check the free downloads for a PDF conversion guide from around the time Pathfinder first came out. It gives pretty good guidelines for converting prestige classes. In particular, it is not necessary for a converted prestige class to have any class skills -- remember that in Pathfinder you retain all class skills from prior classes, so a prestige class with no class skills of its own would work just fine. You only need to add class skills to cover skills that should be class skills for a given prestige class but that the character might not have as a class skill from his prior class(es).

You really nead to look at them on a case by case basis.

Some of them weren't to bad except when combined with other specific feats, spells, or classes. I heard a lot of complaints about ur-priests and forsakers.

Some of them weren't clear and one interpretation was considered weak and the other was uber. The 3.5 dragon disciple comes to mind.

Post a specific one you are looking at on the conversion section of the boards and you will usually get alot of help. (Unless you are put one of the really odd ones that no one used.)

Edit: seriously ninja'd again...

thanks i think it will work out fine as long as the 3.5 prestige classes are not so diffrent from pathfinders. I do not know what prestige classes may come up yet but i know we will use some from 3.5. I do not own any 3.5 books so i was just wondering on the balance but it looks like some are junk and some are good so i let them find out. So i would say they fit in pathfinder.

Considering how many times I have seen similar questions posted on these forums, wouldn't it make sense to have a separate section of the forums where people could upload their versions of prestige classes for others to use/critique? I think that would make many people's lives much easier.

That's what the Conversions subforum is for (and a great many PrC conversions are there indeed).
