{Not sure if this should be in advice or rules.}
Trying to find the murderer.
Body has had jaw smashed so Speak with Dead doesn't work.
I wanted to use mending to fix the jaw. It is no longer a living creature, is not undead, and is not a construct.
Then use Speak with Dead.
GM wasn't sure if mending would work on a dead body so we flipped a coin. No good.
Do you think the mending should have worked on the dead body to allow the Speak With Dead spell to function?

I think that you should accept your GM's ruling. Also, be patient. You waited 2 hours for a response to a question.
At my table, I would have only allowed Mending to work if doing so didn't ruin the plot I was trying to develop. If having the deceased speak to the players didn't ruin all of the planning I had done for that adventure, then sure, I'd have let it work. If I had planned for my players to spend the evening looking for clues and hunting down the murderer (which it seems that your GM had planned) I would not let it work.
Heck, I probably wouldn't have even let Raise Dead work, since it has that handy clause about the soul needing to be willing to return.
Even if I had let Mending work, the answers you get from Speak With Dead are always going to be cryptic.

I think that you should accept your GM's ruling...
I did accept his ruling. None of us were sure if it should have worked. Like I said he went with a flip of the coin. So I don't hink it was integral to his plot.
He often asks me to post these confusing questions on the board be cause he is rarely online.... Also, be patient. You waited 2 hours for a response to a question...
I usually find that if my question scrolls off the 10 most recent list in the section then I don't get any responses at all.
