I hereby declare that I would like to see the phrase "edition war" die a quiet, lonely death.
I'm not sure if this would ever happen. That term belongs to our hobbie's history of the game like: vancian, crunch, fluff.
Maybe there will even be some sort of dictionary, explaining these terms. Would be a fun read in about 20 years ;)But to be serious, there is no more need to struggle over the various past iterations of the game anymore.
And it's to early to struggle over the new ones.
So let's enjoy this time of peace, and prepare a new session of d20 based roleplaying fun.

Or maybe, rather than go to "war", everyone should just blindly go along with whatever the industry leader produces without voicing concerns or opposition or alternative? Oh wait, circa 2008 you certainly would not have wanted that. Maybe today you would though, ha! ;)

Customers choosing where to spend their money isn't a war. What I'm talking about is trash-talking the choices other people make, which is uncool and doesn't help either the conversation or the health of this industry as a whole.

I think the "war" started because the gamers had no options. They spend a lot of money on products that were not supported anymore by the industry leader. No we have many options. Pathfinder, 4E, retro clones, and at some point in the future 5E (that aims to embrace all gamers again)
I don't think, that there will be another "war" like this, because everyone has his niche now.| Ambrosia Slaad |

End of the (1st) Edition War? Just you wait, by the time the BluRay edition hits, it'll be re-done to 1) Lisa and Vic shot first, 2) Ryan Dancey will be overdubbed to scream "Nooooooooooooooo!", and 3) all the goblins will blink via CGI.
This post was meant entirely in jest. If this attempt fails to be perceived as humor, then just think of me as Jar Jar Slaad. :)

Well customers need to decide where to spend their money and in order to do that they typically need to converse about the alternatives, sometimes in a heated fashion.
To me, the 3E/4E edition war was integral to the continued success of Paizo and (especially) the Pathfinder RPG. Integral. You just can't buy that kind of grass roots unabashed, dedicated, and yes, sometimes irrational support. Just ask any successful politician or profitable sports team. You can't rely on the fanatics exclusively, but you do rely on them.
If there were no fanatical 3E fans fighting a sometimes contentious war of words with fanatical 4E supporters Paizo might not have had the inspiration to abandon 4E at all. In fact, I distinctly remember a time when Paizo was clearly on the fence. Imagine if no one wanted to voice a strong opinion about 4E during that time? Or had nowhere to voice it for Paizo to see? For me, when 4E was first announced, I really didn't even think of not converting, I just always have with each new edition. However, when I took a look into the raging threads about the topic on these (and other) boards I read some really good points that opened my eyes. Thanks for that edition war fanatics! ;)

We need to be able to discuss the potential changes, and compare them to the existing system, in an objective manner.
A person should feel free to suggest there is a problem with the status quo, without players of that edition taking it as a personal attack.
They should be able to say they have thought up a new way to do X, without being berated as a traitor.

Edition wars don't end, they just gain new factions.
Now it's:
Original vs Basic/Expert vs 1E vs BECMI vs 2E vs Rules Cyclopedia vs 3.0 vs 3.5 vs 4E vs Pathfinder vs Essentials vs various retro-clones vs other fantasy games
And 5E is about to join the fray.
Rules Cyclopedia is still the best version ever created. ;)

i must note that mr. teter has quite a "classy" and gentleman's manner regarding anti wotc/4th edition posts. my compliments.
i would like to state however, that the nine months of the initial 4th editions release, wotc did not share in such an attitude, and freely took sides during the edition war.
this was a low point in the hobby, and it is what drove me away from the 4th edition. the vocal player base on the message boards across the pond that were very rude in thier staunch defense of "their" game, which come to think of it is infact a role playing game. like "our" pathfinder game. or warhammer. or dnd 3.5
the edition wars was the single most self destructive thing we did to ourselves as rpg fans.
i was never one to buy the "support 4th edition or the rpg hobby will die", but i do see a welcome mat at the thresh hold of the hobby for new and intrested players is much much better then an eternal heated arguement and silly at the doorstep. and thats before they get in and see the rich decor.
4th edition is/was a good game. (satyrs as a pc race!)
i hope 5th edition brings more players in. (more pc race fey!)
and i am confident in pathfinder's continuing growth and success. =] (yay pathfinder!)

Sword & Sorcery Studios had a setting book (Greek Mythology) that had Satyrs done up as a PC race.

forgot to mention that i only play 3.0-3.5 & mostly pathfinder 2 times a week for 4 houts, because at the hobby store gaming table, it appears you are not allowed to like more then 2-3 rpg games as a hobby without silly & rude edition wars.
it seems the pathfinder fans/players are more open minded and forgiving lot at the hobby stores than others, and a good reason to go pathfinder.

War.... War never changes...." (Fallout)
"I think now, looking back, we did not fight the enemy; we fought ourselves. The enemy was in us. The war is over for me now, but it will always be there, the rest of my days." (Platoon)
And to finish.. a bit of Shakespeare:-
"Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more; or close the wall up with our English dead! In peace, there's nothing so becomes a man as modest stillness and humility; but when the blast of war blows in our ears, then imitate the action of the tiger; stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood, disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage" (Henry V)

But wherefore says she not that she is a player of edition numbered 3.5?
And wherefore say not that I am a fan of 4.0?
O. gamers best habit is in edition trust
And edition in play loves not to have numbers told
Therefore I game with her and she with me
And in our expectation of rule compatibility we flatter'd be
(with apologies to W.S. and sonnet number 138, edition 1.0)

Sure we have! B/X exists, it's the successor of the Holmes Basic and of the original D&D boxed set! It's a valued ally against the BECMI and AD&D 2nd degenerates!

Ah Brix, I dunno.
I think that even if you are right and the "war" is over, there will still be combatants holding out in the hills for years and eventually wandering out of the jungle to blink at the sunshine.

Yes, I'm afraid there are still a few grizzled enemy veterans out there in the deep bush that don't yet know or accept the war is over and their side lost, and are still firing shots.
We need to get the word out that it's time for them to lay down their editio - ah - arms.
Some are suggesting a truth and reconciliation commission, that the enemy's black-propaganda and virulently anti-fluffitic policies which some claim triggered the war can be properly exposed, others that 4venger were-wolf commandos, young soldier-fanatics that have grown up only knowing the one edition and who have fought tooth and nail for three years for the empire will not accept the war's end and will need to be rounded up and reeducated.
The real worry is that at the dark heart of the evil empire there's talk that the capitulation press statements don't show a true spirit of surrender, with their talk about 'mistakes' being made and our side being 'decadent', and worst of all whispers of a new 'wonder-weapon' being developed that will restore the empire to it's previously unassailable position of crushing dominance.
Sadly, without a complete surrender, this return to sanity, peace and stability could just be a temporary cease-fire.
Still we've all lost people, at the release of D&D Essentials I lost my kid-brother when he bought it. -sniff- Perhaps a minute of silence might be in order.

I was ready to forgive him, those Essentials kits were sneaky, rigged out to look like they belonged to the good ol' Basic era ... but really a 4e booby trap. Dirty.
I had to frag him I'm afraid.
