Would a rat be a suitable pc mount?

Homebrew and House Rules

How do you think advancing a rat or dire rat would work out for a mount if I were to make a ratfolk cavalier. I'd prefer to not just reskin a wolf, and I know it can't be done RAW from first level, but I have some leway and as long as it's for flavor and doesn't unbalance the play mechanics everything should be kosher. Advancing monsters isn't my strong point...

Isn't a goblin dog just a giant, somewhat funny looking rat?

That's one option, although I like the climb speed of a rat. I guess I'm just really wondering if advancing the size of a dire rat would be unbalanced, and if it is how could it be re-balanced?

A brief glance comparing the dire rat with the giant simple template to a horse or wolf tells me you should be in the clear.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Would it be a rodent of unusual size?

A giant dire rat (Medium) would be quite appropriate for a Small ratfolk's mount... especially since the ratfolk's artwork in the Bestiary 3 clearly shows a ratfolk riding a giant rat.

when you think about it, that's just so wrong. It's like riding an ape into battle as a human.

Now a girallon on the other hand...

I'm building a Ratfolk wizard and I wanted him to have a giant dire rat mount...even though it's mentioned in the ratfolk description I'm not sure how much one would cost. Any ideas?
