Im playing as GM on tuesday using the quest in the guide but ive changed the beginning a bit to make it more interactive for them to find out about blackfang etc. Im really wanting it to go down well with the people and playing with and for them to have fun, is there any last minute advice to keep it entertaining

I would say, depending on the experience of your group, lean towards using the pregen characters. If your players are OK with it and they are inexperienced the pregen sheets are a huge boon to the ease and smoothness of play.

If you're running the adventure for new players and not just starting at the beginning of the dungeon, one thing you may need to be concerned with is the possibility of "option paralysis." That is, given too many possible options, people may just freeze up and not know what to do.
Make sure you have some good "leads" ready to go so that you can nudge players in the right direction. You don't need to force them to do any one thing in particular, but make sure that you have some ways prepared to help nudge them in the right direction if they aren't sure where to go next.
Good luck, have fun, and let us know how it goes!

I apologize.
Now to the OP, getting a small background would be pretty useful, and IIRC the Rise of the Runelords player's guide had a section on Sandpoint, I could be wrong and it might be one of the articles in Burnt Offerings, but with the Sandpoint primer see if you can work out a reason for these characters to be going on the quest, maybe one of the players has decided that his rogue considers himself a ladies man and he wants to impress the elven ranger who hangs around town, or the cleric, who just got transferred to the town feels his career is slightly stagnant and has decided to impress his new boss

Yeah I have tried putting a few more leads in for them to give them a push in a direction that they could go so hopefully ive done enough.

do you think it would be best for me to create the character backgrounds, or come up with the backgrounds with the players.

Let them come up with the backgrounds themselves, try not to restrict their creativity, but don't be afraid to veto things, you are the GM after all, but they are the players, their characters your world

Last night went quite well, the players created their own characters and we ran through the dungeon in the guide going over the rules as we went. Didnt get into the role-playing side fully but had more of a laugh than anything which is good. Hopefully everyone would wanna play again. The main problem was the dragon at the end there seemed to be a biggish build up to the battle but then the guide advised for the dragon to fly off and I think that was to much of an anti-climax for my group, especially because I couldnt find the right time for it to leave. One of the players used the premade fighter but by the end his character seemed to be superpowerful, wiping out most of the creatures in one or two slashes, even the skeletons. All in all a fun night but would probably be better when the players know the rules a bit more and feel more confident. Thanks for all the advice.
