traits that give bonuses to skills, and how they stack.

Rules Questions

I know you can't have more ranks in a skill than you have hit die, so at level 1, when looking at a class skill, do you have

1) 1 rank
2) + 3 bonus somethings (are these considered ranks?)
3) + 1 or 2 bonuses you might get from a 'trait'
4) + bonuses you might get from a second trait (though I'm sure there're aren't many duplicate traits out there).

An example of a trait skill bonus might be
You gain a +2 trait bonus on Ride checks, and the Ride skill becomes a class skill for you.

So does one have

a) 1 rank?
b) 4 ranks?
c) 6 ranks?

And how does this affect something like the following pre-requirement for a prestige class?
Skills: Disguise 2 ranks, Stealth 5 ranks.

Theoretically, can one meet the requirements after 1st level, or must one wait five levels?

Don't forget from your Race (sometimes they may stack) or special bonuses from a class/archtype.

You gain a +2 trait bonus on the ride skill. If you put ranks in ride and are of a class that normally wouldn't have ride as a class skill then you get to treat ride as a class skill anyways because of the trait.

So at level 1 you could have:
1(rank) + 3(class bonus) + 2(trait bonus) + (dex mod) = +(6+dex mod bonus) on ride checks.

If you gained another trait that stated it gave a trait bonus to ride checks you would only use the higher of the two bonuses since they are of the same bonus type (i.e. "Trait").

If it doesn't say the bonus is of the "Trait Bonus" type then it would stack.

Ranks are not bonuses.

You can only ever have one rank per level in a skill. You can have as many bonuses as you find different types.

Say you're 1st level, but have 1 Rank in Acrobatics. You also have a +10 competance skill item, +2 from traits, + 3 from it being a class skill, and a +7 insight bonus. You also have 16 acc for +3 more.

1+10+2+3+7+3 may be a +26 to your roll, but you have 1 rank. Thus you do not qualify for anything that requires more ranks.

In this case you have 1 rank, +3 bonus as a class skill in which you have ranks, +2 trait bonus, plus your Dexterity modifier, which let's say is +3. You add +9 to Ride checks.

If you had another effect that granted a trait bonus (most likely a trait, though there are traits that grant other types or untyped bonuses and at least one non-trait effect that as written gives a trait bonus), they wouldn't stack because they're the same type of bonus.

You have a maximum of 1 rank at 1st level, so you can't qualify for the prestige class you mention until 6th level.
