Wondering if when you play, do you use character portraits
If you use what do you do for them. Do you search the net for fantasy art until you find a picture that suits how you imagine the character to look? Do you draw them? have a friend draw them or use some other program?
I personally use IMVU to create mine and my BF portraits. I have had this software since 2007 and have a huge inventory of items to select plus I have developed many items.
I know there are other programs like Second Life as well but have never used this one for portraits
Chime in and tell us how you create portraits or what you use for them if you use them

My group has a strange approach to this...
Some games have had the cast of characters commissioned. We have one member that loves to see his characters drawn out, but is not himself artistic, so he frequently pays other artists to do it for him - and more than once that has turned into the whole cast getting drawn up.
Some games have had the cast of characters drawn up by me (the GM), though usually I only draw characters that really stand out for me - which usually aren't my own characters.
Most of our games, though, we just find a picture online that is pretty close and call it good - if we get an visualization for the character at all.

I frequently see artists on DeviantArt who take commissions for RPG characters although I've never gone that route myself — mostly because I'm worried they'd get porn-ified. >.> Do any of you know of reliable artists that can be commissioned who can do faithful portraits without making them porny?
Generally I'll search high and low for actual models with appropriate features, but it's seldom that I find a singular individual with the right look. An artist that I could send a folder of images and say, "This model's build, that model's attitude, this' one's facial structure, that one's eyes," would be great.

If I had more time I'd do my group's character portraits- also I'm sort of out of practice, but I'm taking an art class this school year, so I'll see how that turns out. My muse is fickle.
And if I get a Deviantart account, I'd probably offer to do requests from these messageboards. And no, I don't porn-ify pictures.
For the time being, I usual have at least one artistic player. Sierra has been doing chibi versions of our characters that are kinda cute.

I almost always have a character portrait. I draw them myself. Only a couple of times have I played without one, and I was noticably less invested in the character as a result. It helps me get into character to have a visual representation. I have a few examples that you can see on my deviant art page. With the exception of the drawing done basically as a joke (since it was of a humorous character from the boards) I wouldn't call any of it porn-ified...but I may have a diferent definition than someone else does. *shrug*
None of that is terribly recent as I'm having technical problems with both my scanner and my computer. Which is too bad since I have a whole slew of character sketches from my pbp that will be ready to upload by the end of Christmas break. I'll have to figure something out I guess. :)

Lyn, I'd like to know how helpful my HeroMachine pictures are to your drawing endeavors.
Especially when trying to picture what you want your characters to look like, very helpful. You often include details of equipment or clothing that wouldn't occur to me. Gives me a good jumping off point, especially for those characters whose avatar picture is a bit generic. : )
I've actually changed details on some of my drawings of my own characters after seeing one of your pictures as well because I like the choices you made better than what I was going to do originally.| Geistlinger |
I use Poser 7 or 8 ( I have both, it depends on what exactly I want to do) to do character portraits for our group.
Anyone interested in seeing them can find examples in my deviantArt gallery.

My party seldom ever has a character portrait, or even cares, really. I leaf through Deviant Art though to find inspiration for my own characters, as well as NPC's.
However, many years ago the game master for out DC Heroes game would do portraits or sketches of our characters. He'd even draw and color what the cover of a comic book about our group would look like before we'd start to play.
Good times.

As someone who knows of several good artists who do comish portraits sometimes decently cheap I can honestly say the only reason I know a few of them try to make it (I guess pervy, if nude is pervy) Is because while clothing is usually okay armor gets annoying and complicated to look right. That being said A good friend of mine does like busts and headshots which can suit the purpose without being pervy. If you want send me a pm and I can pass along their info.

The Nine: Thanks, but you're responding to a post from over 3 years ago. ;) (Sadepocok has been necroing old threads to advertise that "epicgenerator" website.)
In any event, in the last few years I've managed to find a lot of artists I like, and now have a few pieces of character artwork to show for it. Also, I've keeping a gallery of DA artists I like who take commissions for character portraits — figured some fellow Paizonians might get some use from it. :)
