I am just wondering if a non magical holy symbol has any use for a non cleric.
Is there any reason for a character to have or use it other than role play?
Rules-wise, the only value to a non-cleric is the intrisic monetary value.
Roleplaying-wise, another idea to to treat a pious non-cleric's holy symbol as Jewelry, described to be in the form of the appropriate symbol/motif.

Aren't all holy symbols non-magical? I thought the magic invoked when they're used for spellcasting and stuff comes entirely from the deity, and the holy symbol is just that - a symbol of the link between the spellcaster and their god(dess).
Unless there are magic items built in the form of holy symbols that I don't know about. I'm new enough to the game that such a thing wouldn't surprise me.

It can affect certain monsters, also.

Remember Bennie from The Mummy? When he pulled a holy symbol and tried a 'sacred verse' to ward off Imhotep? And when that didn't work, he pulled about twenty different holy symbols of different religions and just started going down the list? Just about as useful, but it is good depth to a character from an RP perspective.

Depending on the shape, some make good bottle-openers, or impromptu digging tools.
Naturally, I thought of Cayden Cailean when I read the part about bottle openers. But his holy symbol really is a mug, so it's already plenty useful, especially if you visit one of his shrines, which are mostly inside pubs and taverns.

I guess it depends on what else he's wearing. With a kilt, for instance...
