Spell Casting

Liberty's Edge

Looking at a way to keep my spellcasters safe - was looking at fighting defensively/total defence - can either be used whilst casting a spell

Both of those are standard actions, so the spell's casting time has to be less than a standard action.

Fighting defensively could be used if you are charged with a melee touch spell.

Why are your spell casters in range of melee attackers or outside cover in the case of ranged attacks?

Spell casters can stay out of range easily. A war trained horse at lower levels, through spells at higher levels.

Use total defense as a last resort - usually it's better to just cast a spell defensively and hope there's not any ready actions waiting for your face.

Thanks for that - so not so much daring from spellcasters then

How to Keep Your Casters Safe
1. Be a non-small race.
2. Cast expeditious excavation near yourself.
3. Step into the hole.
4. Drop prone.
5. Stand up (move action), cast a spell over the top of the hole (standard action), drop prone again (free action).
6. Enjoy the fact that no one has line of sight/line of effect to you when it's not your turn.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 as necessary.

I'm not a big fan of this idea, then wouldn't the enemy just ready actions to attack you when you jumped up, possibly ruining your spell and essentially your round?

If they do, then they could've done it anyway - it's not like popping up and down somehow enabled them to ready their attacks. And this way, you have cover. So it's still a gain.

And pray that no one has wall of stone or shape stone ready.. Or that you are standing on stone (since expeditious excavation does not work on stone).

Hey, never said it was fool-proof. But it can be a handy trick sometimes.

Perm reduce person.
Kill self- have ally cast temporary resurrection, create undead on self use juju zombie option. (GM interpretation/cooperation required) also you are now NE. And you have to be 11th to do, excellent all around defense.
