Mithral Heavy Shield for TWF

Rules Questions

Would you allow a mithral heavy shield as a light weapon for the purpose of TWF. I know its not legal as fas as RAW go, but do you see any problems with it?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

No, or I'd have to allow a mithral longsword to act as a light weapon when TWFing for rules consistency.
Shield Master feat removes the TWF penalties for the shield attack (other weapon still gets the regular penalties, though). Sword-and-Shield Ranger can get Shield Master and TWF by level 6 without worrying about pre-reqs.

So a guy with TWF, shield master, a longsword and a heavy spiked shield would get -4 / -0 ?

Yup. Also if the shield was the main attack (FAQ and new errata took out the mandatory off-hand weapon in shield descriptions) and you got a light weapon as off-hand weapon (like a short sword), the TWF penalties would be: -0 shield /-2 off-hand.

We had a guy do this with a heavy adamantine spiked shield in his main hand and off handed a light mithril thowing shield was very interesting.

Did the off hand shield give any AC?

I house ruled a feat where it gave it if he took a full defensive or half when fighting defensivly.

it shouldn't give AC. Shield bonuses don't stack. also yeah. one of the campaigns i'm playing right now has a cleric that uses a heavy spiked shield in the main hand and a holy symbol in the other hand.
