5th Printing Core Rulebook Errata Discussion (v1.3)

Just checked my E-mail inbox to find the new errata for the 5th-printing of the core rulebook (apparently released two days ago, so apologies if there are other threads). I can't believe how many long term problems they fixed this time round!

In my opinion it is by far the best one yet in terms of its coverage and overall positive impact to the game. It clears up SO MANY issues that have been plaguing these forums, such as what it means to "wield" a weapon, or "can you really wield a double weapon in one hand?" It also answers several questions that my group has had for YEARS, such as "do you lose the scroll or waste a charge when you fail a Use Magic Device check?"

That being said, I'm not too keen on needing to know the spell when brewing a potion (now the only people who will take the feat are those who get it for free) or that my +5 sword can now be sundered by a mundane club (remote, but no longer impossible).

What do you think?

The potions bit makes sense.

Not too keen on the weapon breaking bit. It does break the Shatterspike a bit though.

lol. With the new errata, the shatterspike's "can damage weapons with an enhancement bonus of +4 or lower" becomes a hindrence rather than a boon.

Welp. Thanks for bringing these to light, Mr. Dork. I cant decide whether I'm happy withthis or not, but I can finally make a Gimble-esque gnome bard with a crossbow, so I suppose it isnt all bad.

I like the new changes really nothing really stupid at all.

Another one of the (few) aspects of the new errata that I really don't like: Transmutation (polymorph) spells only grant +10 to disguise instead of +20.

You ACTUALLY CHANGE into said creature! How is getting a bigger bonus than an illusion NOT warranted!?

Does the Errata appear in the PDF downloadable Core rules or is it only available as an errata pdf?

Incidently - whats the link to the errata?

Go to your downloads. Errata is listed there.

My favorite bit is that haste explicitly works with natural attacks.

Yep. For everything I don't like, there are 20+ things that I absolutely LOVE.

My CRB is getting a little ragged... perhaps it wouldn't hurt to invest in a new copy. ;D

I got two copies held together by duck tape. Perhaps I should consider this option as well?

I'd say I should check out what's changed since the 1st printing, but I don't think I'm going to ever seriously play it anyway.

I thought they were done with errata? I thought I had a completely errata free 5th printing book! LOL, I guess there no such animal.

Is this new errata or options?

Wrayden, it was my understanding that this is errata for the new 5th printing (in that, this new errata updates you TO the 5th printing).

Am I mistaken?

Because the game achieved ideal form magically on only the fifth try? I mean no one is confused and asks questions in the rules form and that robust faq system was a pointless addition, right?

;)

That's correct RD, I think your loose terminology was the confusion... The Errata is not FOR the 5th printing, I.e.to apply to the 5th printing, it is for previous printings to update them to the changes that the 5th printing incorporates. There is currently no official Errata that supersedes anything in the latest, 5th, printing.

I was heartened to see such a significant Errata....
Even if there is still stuff that needs attention, this really shows that they are putting attention into this area. A good number of the updates seem like they are merely for clarity rather than a
change to RAW function per se, but that in itself is also good IMHO because even if I personally find a subject clear enough, the rules should be easily grokable by ALL readers, so updates for clarity, or repetition if need be, are a sign that paizo is addressing that aspect, and I expect they will address that aspect more in future updates.

My favorite: Avalanches are no longer a 1-way trip to rules purgatory, you can now escape them just like Cave-Ins... IMHO avalanches of snow should be easier than digging out of rubble, but at least having clear rules that logically complete the paragraph makes the rules fully functional there.

Good bunch of errata, but I was sad that you still can't raise a 2nd level character, you need a ressurection or better for them.

EDIT: scratch that, I guess they fixed that issue at some point that I missed in the errata documents; it's fine int he PDF now.

Did the Stealth changes make it into this round of the errata? Or will that be delayed all the way until the 6th printing?

Favorite change:

Fixed the pdf version of page 554 to clarify that you can't counterspell spell-like abilities. Apparently fixed in the 4th print ed, but didn't make the 4th ed pdf. This one really irritated me, and I'm glad to see the pdf fixed. The pdf should match the printed edition.

It's not even clear that the stealth changes are anything more than a thought experiment. There's been no confirmation that I've seen that they will make any changes to the stealth rules (at least not until a 2nd edition of the game, which is many, many years away.)

RAW, the feat requirements still list Weapon Focus (longbow or shortbow), and the class abilites work on "arrows," not bolts. Personally I think it is a fantastic concept, I would allow if I was GMing, excepting only PFS. For that matter, I like the idea of a ranger (crossbow combat style from APG), alchemist, arcane archer.

I suspect a big change like that is a bit more than they want to do in an errata.
