I'm down with BND (yeah, you know me) but I feel like "Support Small Business Day" makes more sense.
I like the theory of a day without spending dollars, but if you are just going to hit Mall-Wart the next day, what is the point?
It may be Stockholm Syndrome, but I kind of like capitalism. Not the corporate version, but I like supporting small local business. In many cases the owners are my friends, and shopping at their stores is good for both of us. I should point out that my definition of small business is usually a handful of employees, or 20-30 in a couple of cases. I don't consider 200 employees "small business".
I'm not trying to pick on BND, I guess I just suspend it for small, local business.

At the moment, I feel like saluting anyone who makes it a point, for whatever reason, not to buy anything on Black Friday. At night, anyway.
And now I'm going to rant. Undoubtedly, this rant will offend many people. This post may get removed. But hey, the Paizo office is closed today. Maybe no Paizo staff member will SEE this post before Monday.
I buy a lot of toys myself. Many of my posts on these forums show how I buy a lot of RPG-related stuff, and novels, and videos, and so forth. And I do look for bargains. BUT TO STAY UP ALL NIGHT FOR IT?!? How am I supposed to function the next day? Either I have work the next day, or if I don't, then I need to take care of my children! Either way, staying up all night will severely hinder my ability to think straight, which I find difficult enough already.
And what kind of example are you setting for your children, staying up all night and being out of touch with reality all the next day? How can you expect them to go to bed when you say so? And think how much worse it is when you take your children with you and keep them up all night! What kind of message are you giving them?!?
If it were a truly important purpose or special occasion, all right. But just to save a little money?!
If you need those items so badly, then just spend a little extra money on them! And if you can't afford to do so, then learn to live without! I once REALLY wanted to join a certain weekly PFRPG game, but decided that it was at a time when my family would really need me, so I reluctantly declined. Being a parent means having to make some sacrifices.
<sigh> Well, that's a load off my chest. I wonder if I'll get banned from paizo.com for this? :)

Why would you get banned? There was nothing excessive or insulting in your post.
Anyhow, I probably won't go out shopping - not because of some Adbusters campaign (or other anti-capitalist notion), I won't go out because there are too many damn people. Everywhere.
Sometimes I forget it's Black Friday (I usually do every year) and make the mistake of driving out to pickup something I need,... say Petco - which happens to be in/near a mall. I see all the cars and people fighting for spots and I just say "oh yeah, Black Friday,.... stupid" , then turn around and drive home as I think about Nuclear war.
Much like Bitman posted, I'll just pay the extra to not deal with the hordes of crazy people.

For some reason I see most of the mods agreeing with you. Nothing really offensive either, so I doubt it will even get more than a casual glance. Not like the heart failure I have given Gary and Ross a couple of times. Of course I also go back and self edit or remove my own posts.
Life is too short to get worked up too much on a forum post.

After the two incidents today, I think it may become known as "the day of spray."

I dunno. Sometimes it's fun. My former supervisor and her mother have been going out for Black Friday for years upon years and to them it's a family tradition. She truly wishes she has a daughter so she can share the madness with her, if she's so willing.
That said, you should not be using your infant as a weapon to get a tv at 68% off.

Yeah I get what you're saying! I am all for small businesses, at least within the bounds of capitalism. It is, however, an interesting experience going a full day without buying something.* I recommend it to everyone next year.
*Well, not for me. I'm f$!~in frugal all the time. But people I know do buy stuff often.

Obviously you have not heard of the heady drug known as sleep deprivation. NO FLSEEP NO FEER>>> AWSEOME> Not that it's any more responsible than other mind-altering habits.
Anyway, I actually knew BND was coming up before I remembered about Black Friday. I have been successfully aconditioned.

I think the idea of hiring off-duty cops as store security is a bad idea. First pepper spray, then a grandfather brutalized while attempting to help his grandson when the mob turned ugly.
If they're going to hire these guys, they should have their own security instruct them on proper procedure. You don't arrest a possible shoplifter until they've passed the registers and are headed out the door. Otherwise, they're just shoppers carrying merchandise in an unusual manner.

I ended up buying dinner for my girlfriend who was feeling hypoglycemic, and who then promptly ralphed it up.
But other than that I didn't spend a penny!
But Amazon has the blu-ray of LotR: Extended cut for $50. That's a deal I might not be able to pass on.

If it has Orlando Bloom flying like a fairy princess in it with his limitless arrow dispenser and magic elephant spider climb while simultaneously taking down the armies of Mordor and Sauron himself and then sundering the ring with his bow, it's not worth getting.

So I take it you're not a fan of the LotR movies?
You did highlight pretty much the ONLY thing in those movies I didn't love-the battle of pelinor fields. Helms Deep was 100x as tense and exciting. Pelinor Fields (sp) just looked like a bad videogame.| Kevin Andrew Murphy Contributor |

Last time they hired regular temps as extra security, they told some 6'5" guy who'd never done security to man the main doors and he was trampled to death by a horde of rabid shoppers. Walmart does not want a repeat of that.
If shoppers trample off-duty cops, at least Walmart can plead that they knew the job was dangerous when they took it.
As for the rest of it, I find it particularly ironic that I just saw a banner ad for "Small Business Saturday" sponsored by American Express. Really small businesses don't like credit cards because they cut into their marginal profits too much.

I just don't dislike him enough to not see a movie he's in because of it.
Also, that scene is in the regular edition as well. The battle that is. He doesn't sunder the ring though, that's just silly ;)I wouldn't exactly call it prophecy when it's an 8 year old film, readily available on DVD for nearly 7 years now.
