Alchemical Grease. Does it Burn?

Rules Questions

Lantern Lodge

I got a bunch of occasional players, who used to be quite active in 3.5. When we played a 1 shot game, they start lubing themselves up with Alchemical Grease.

While Alchemical Grease goes have wonderful properties when it comes to oil wrestling and its various cousins, like grabs...etc

I got a big question: Does it BURN?

Science it. Buy some KY and a zippo. Report back later.

Lantern Lodge

Sigh. Is this one of those questions that NO ONE knows the proper answer to?

Only 2 real answers to this:

1) Does it say it is flamable in the item description or specifically note that fire has a special effect on it? If not, no.

2) If the GM says so, yes. Ideally the GM should have a viable reason why and then be consistant in the application of that reason.

There are a ton of lubricants in existance today that are non readily flammable or just non flammable. Also, it is generally my opinion that ALCHEMICAL items usually do not share a lot of the flaws of the mundane items they replicate, hence one of the things that defines them as alchemical and not normal.

This came up for us on Tuesday. I told everyone this story. The GM decided it doesn't burn.

"In the past I've house-ruled Grease as Flammable.

Consequence: a first level spell become overpowered in the hands of the Sorcerer and a friend with a torch or Alchemist's Fire (back in 3.5, probably going to be even more overpowered with Spark now).

Reaction: I (eventually) started to raise the Dex and hence Reflex saves of my NPCs - I fielded a lot more archers and ranged-focused opponents against my players. They were often able to make the save and walk out of the Grease away from the players.

Result: The players found it difficult facing ranged opponents more often, especially when there were two 10'x10' flaming squares in the way - they couldn't charge. Eventually they stopped using Grease in that way, but they slaughtered anything and everything I threw at them from levels 2-5."
