Yet Another Wild Shape

Rules Questions

Sorry to bother everyone, but I am figuring out the Wild Shape ability of my groups' druids.

So, as far as I can figure out from reading book/prd en previous topics...

Sure:
* Standard action, no provoke. Which means a if you change into a bird you can still fly away (with provoking)
* One hour per level, not 1 min/level as opposed to spell

---

Doubtful:
* Does the druid cast? Blink? Gesture? Cough? Or can it be done 100% silently?

---

Difficult:
Let's say I have a druid with Wooden Armor (+3 ac) and Dex 16 (+3).
His AC is 10+3+3 = 16.

What exactly happens when the druid changes shape to
(A) a small dog
=> According to spell: +2 DEX and +1 Natural armor, and gains scent & lowlight
=> According to magic: Lose armor bonus

So... ... ... AC 16 gets a -3 (losing armor) and a +1 (natural) and a +1 (improved dex) => AC 15
=> Question: Does the druid get +1 ATK/AC because it changed size from medium to small?
=> Q: If the druid did not have Weapon Finesse, it still uses STR for ATK bonus right?

---

(B) a medium boar
=> According to spell: +2 STR and +2 Natural armor, and gains scent & lowlight
=> According to magic: Lose armor bonus

So... ... ... AC 16 gets a -3 (losing armor), and a +2 (natural) => AC 15

---

What else does the druid get?
Is there something I'm missing?
Or does the druid just open the monster manual, and enchance this creature via spell?

Wild Shape is Supernatural. So in addition to not being subject to counterspells or Attacks of Opportunity, that means that you don't have somatic or verbal components.

Remember that to actually cast while in Wild shape, you require the Natural Spell feat or similar effects (you could still cast Silent spells, for example). I seem to recall that there is also another feat outside the Core book which allows you to speak in Wild Shape.

Yes, size bonuses and penalties apply.

Yes, you lose armor bonuses. You retain magical effects which are always-on though -- you still benefit from your Ring of Protection, or your armor's Light Fortification field. The solution to this problem is Wild armor, which retains its armor bonus. The developers have even clarified that a Druid is not inhibited by armor while in Wild Shape; so a Druid that enters Wild Shape with Wild Full Platemail would not suffer lowered speed, or its Armor Check Penalty.

Hmmm. I'm not sure about the Weapon Finesse. Am I correct in thinking that animals below a certain size automatically get Weapon Finesse, or am I misremembering the rule in the CRB that <Small creatures use Dex for CMB?

Either way, a Druid is not an Animal, and even if they do get a bonus feat for being small, a Druid would not count as one.

I will then go further to point out that the later Wild Shape enhancements often penalize your Dexterity and boost your Strength (not counting Elemental Form, which I understand can boost Dex) and that choosing Weapon Finesse should be well-considered if it won't synergize with your class abilities.

just to add in, there is an armor quality (for magic armor) called "wild" which allows for a druid to retain the Armor bonus from armor while in Wildshape.

I know about the wild armor thingie..

But am I correct in my other assumptions?
The druids basically only loses and gains armor, and gains special abilities (fly/scent...)
And a +20 on disguise-as-animal

What about rake/pounce?

Now if you multiclass as a Druid/Monk LN... ;) Just look up the posts I put out on that and what they said. You can do it and it works in the rules.

in regard to the specail attacks, I would point toward the RAW in the specific spell they are using (during wildshape)

Beast shape I grants climb 30, fly 30 (ave maneuver), swim 30, darkvision 60, lowlight vision, and scent if the animal you are turning into has any of those.

Beast shape II grants climb 60, fly 60 (good maneuver) swim 60, darkvision, lowlight vision, scent, grab, pounce and trip if the animal you are turning into has any of those.

So look through the spell descriptions for the special abilities

rake and pounce arnt till later. beast shape 2 at 6th, BS3 at 8th.

As for enhancing abilities, the druid uses his own stats and alters those depending on size and form. So a 8 stenth gnome will only get to 14 in huge shape.

one of the things i'm glad paizo fixed from 3.5, druid could just dump their physical stats and pump up the mental stats(that's 3 16's in a 20 point buy before racials)and if they survived to 4th level, bam melee combat viable. by 8th level they could stay in their animal form 24/7 ignoring their normal physical stats completely and only took one feat to cast while wild shaped.

And never be able to talk to anyone? Wildshaped druid might be able to cast spells, but not talk.. So I hope somebody bought high "sense motive" coz otherwise, that player is keeping his mouth *shut*!

Also: Survive 3 levels with sucky STR/DEX/CON.. Bad GM, use those fort/reflex saves ;)
