"Sword & Planet" AP: Yes, please!

Pathfinder Adventure Path General Discussion

Just curious. Has Paizo considered a sword & planet-style adventure path set in one (or more) of Golarion's neighbors? Would anyone be interested in this? I know I would!

Ah! There's already a huge thread on this...my bad :(

Silver Crusade

John Carter of Akiton? I'd be interested.

However I believe that it's unlikely we would see this AP anytime soon. James Jacobs has said that he wants to concentrate on the Inner Sea for a while after doing Tian Xia.

Also this sort of stuff is very YMMV. Some people love it, some people hate it. Paizo's best sellers are the AP installments and it makes no financial sense for them to dedicate 6 months of sales to what may end up being a niche market.

It is far more likely that this sort of stuff would appear in modules where it is not that much of a risk.

Yeah. Shame, too. A sword and planets adventure path appeals more to me than a Tian-Xia adventure path.

This and a megadungeon would be my two votes for a future AP. The Distant Setting Campaign book coming out next year is so far the only one I'm really excited for. I don't play PFS but if I did, I'd totally be pushing for an Akiton Pathfinder lodge.

I was curious because I had a weird dream about it the other night: an adventure path described as "Pathfinder's version of Dark Sun", which itself is inspired on the Sword & Planet genre.

It's a shame to hear they're not considering it. Maybe after they've exhausted other ideas...I hope :)

Stay tuned...

Paizo products are designed to support each other. It's not exactly a coincidence that Ultimate Combat includes Samurai, Monks, and Ninja, and that PFS is doing a eastern thing, and that the Tian Xia AP arrives at the exact same time.

More like planning.

So, when you see the source book for other planets of Golarion announced, you'll know the rest is coming, probably with some plastic minis to seal the deal.

While I wish things were that sample--and you may see some more planetary adventure around here in the near future--Distant Worlds isn't an announcement of an interplanetary AP. It's more of a test--if folks like the book and clamor for more of the other planets, we'll listen to that. But we certainly don't want to bet our biggest product line on an area of the setting that (while I personally adore it) hasn't yet proven itself with the community.

Test a market before you commit? Again. This is evidence of some really smart planning.

So, sure, I get it, not all ideas work. But if this ship does sail, I am sure it will show up in a coordinated way.

If not an AP, how about a Module, then?

I think, just above, Spicer just offered to write one for you. :)

I would be on board for this.

I would be all over that in a instant. Whether an AP or just an adventurer module to test the waters.

+1 from me!

Me?! I have no weight to throw around on this topic whatsoever. It's the full voice of the Paizo fan community that'll have to pony up and express their desire for such a thing. And I'll be right there beside you like any other fan. In my experience, Paizo listens to its fanbase far more frequently than us crazy writers.

+1 on this.

I want a scenario on Castrovel, actually. It sounds fun. Akiton was visited in a PFS scenario (Red Revolution), btw.

Neil, in all of your free time, just write it and send to Paizo, and make it awesome enough that they have no choice but to publish it. (and if for some reason they don't want it, you can send a copy to me, since it would already be written.)

My feeling is.....I think a big part of this is going to be how well the John Carter movie coming out next March goes over. It's frustrating to me, because the Avatar movie (the conceptualization of the world, as well as a lot of the action) seems to owe a lot to JCoM, and I kinda hope the "story that inspired it all" does well. I hope they don't screw it all up.

I get the need to hedge bets on this though; one of TSR's problems was churning out gobs and gobs of settings and setting support and competing with itsself after a fashion.

I guess my question is: what can I personally do to make something like this happen?
I kinda ask about it every couple months or so; I personally have been "holding back" because I don't want to be annoying.

"Are we there yet? Are we there yet?"

Castrovel would be my first choice too. For some reason it fires my imagination more strongly than the other planets.

Still, I hope that a full AP would have time to visit several planets.

I think it would be great to test it out with a module and I hope its on the higher level since we would be going to another planet id hope it would be at least 12 level or higher, I would buy this module and I dont buy many

Definitely behind this Conan, Tarzan and John Carter were my first fantasy heroes

And Spicer needs a first part of an AP on his resume..

Want, want, want, want, want, want, want, want, want, want, want, want, want!

A little too much? Over the top?

I would love to see a Swords & Planets AP, since ER Burroughs was one of the first authors I heavily read.

However, I definitely can see how this might not be a mainstream AP, and would be risky to do, even if the Distant Worlds book does well.

A couple of modules that can be stand alone as well as having modest ties between them would be nice - if the first doesn't sell well, then you stop there, if they do sell well then you basically have a mini-AP.

I have been having trouble deciding what I want to read next. This discussion has me thinking I need to read some ER Burroughs. :^)

Pshaw, we all know you're secretly masterminding the underground "All things awesome" offices at Paizo's hidden bunker.

Riiiiight. And now that you've discovered our little secret, I'll have to send out the Paizo gninjas to eliminate you as an information leak...or, at the very least, have them put contact poison on the goods in your next shipment. ;-)

Scarab Sages

Oh, yes.

I would certainly buy this.

Yeah a module sounds great that way it wont impact my subscription. As a subscriber to the AP's from the very beginning I can honestly say that I have NO INTEREST in a Sword and Planet AP and would probably cancel my subscription.

If you want to see more sword and planet stuff, please buy Distant Worlds! Sales are by far the best way to indicate to management that there's actually an audience for something as niche as planetary adventure...

Spoiler:

Is it still self-serving if I'm serving you, too? :D

Would love to see something like this. I'd like a hardback rulebook filled with Sword and Planet goodness even more :-).

While setting books are nice (and yeah, I will be buying this one), I'm a much bigger fan of the APs (especially when they have nice tie in books - like this one). I'm skipping the next couple of APs as it is (no interest in GMing pirates & artifact-collecting, though I'll play 'em if one of my friends decides to give one a try), but a Sword & Planet fantasy is definitely my bag of tea.

In general I've really liked the "nitch"/experimental campaigns over more traditional ones.

Liberty's Edge

I think that a set of independent but linked modules would be the best option.

I would buy them or AP, but probably a full AP would be a bit too risky for Paizo.

Looking the list after my name, you can easily see that it will not really change what I buy, so I am not a good metric for what the general public will do. :P

I've been agitating for a Sword & Planet AP for some time. I would love to run it!
