One size category larger seems to be the standard. Otherwise even if a creature is same or smaller and has the strength to do so it's more a matter of being carried.
but there is no official rule otherwise then?
I am asking since you, as a Beast Rider can get a medium size t-rex before its level 7 increase, but obviously this means you can't ride it.
Isn't being carried the same as riding something anyway?

Flesh and bone are different than steel and wheels.
Not that I'm aware of. Hence my use of "seems to be the standard." Though you may want to differentiate between riding and carryng. I'll check my books to see if I can find anythign official.

The only "rules" that I'm aware of are that the PRD states in the equipment chapter that a horse is a suitable mount for the standard medium races while a pony is a suitable mount for the standard small races and that a riding dog is specifically trained to carry a small sized rider. Other than that, there are a handful of class abilities that say the mount must be one size category larger than the rider to be suitable, but I've seen no hard and fast rule.

That would be sufficient for me. Though if you want might mouse as a "mount" that's a different kind of conversation. ;-)

I would like to thank everyone for their help so far.
Ok, so if that was the case, then that would be fine, however, the beast rider, at level 4, can pick a Tyrannosaurus, which at level 4 is a medium size creature. At level 7 it becomes large. This is a bit confusing as it specifically states a 4th level medium size creature using a medium size mount. The Tyrannosaurus only walks a on two legs, and only have a strength of 14. Which he could technically carry another medium size creature, but at medium or more likely, heavy load. So the language of this ability seems to counter itself.
Yet it seems as if they do in fact want you to ride one. Even though it stats at the start you can't do this. Which is confusing me greatly as I already let one player use a mount they can not use because it was allowed in their selection for their levels.
I'm going to stand by the fact that if you are under its carrying capacity, you can use it as a mount. In the case of a mouse. If the mouse had a strength score of 20, then yes, you could ride it. Since at that point you are trying to ride Mighty Mouse, and he could probably easily fly you somewhere. Physics weep since he must also have super anchoring abilities since that would mean you are effectively balancing your butt on a tennis ball, but hey, that man over there just threw a fireball out of his hand.
In the case of a pony or a baby T-rex, it is probably more possible.
