Sword of Subtlety Cost

Any idea how this was determined?

I'd like to break down how they arrived at the cost (approximately) to determine how much it should cost to be added onto a different kind of weapon other than a short sword, or perhaps an equivalent enhancement bonus that it should represent (maybe +2? 3?)

some people will say its a flat +$ cost you can add.

some will tell you count it as close to the nearest pricing diff would be.

some will tell you it cant be done.

specific items do what ever they want, upgrading them is purely in the realm of houserules

I'd say they arrived at the price by copying it right out of the 3.x srd.

I tend to think they just used a static +20,000 to generate the ability but that's pretty exceptionally good. This items been around forever, and I am not so sure the price framework was as developed by its first printed.

The problem with trying to derive this cost is there are just too many variables. Not many items give an untyped +4 to attack and damage. And not many items give the reduction for only working with a single (common) class ability.

Changing the base weapon shouldn't change the price. Other than by the difference in the base weapon price.

That said, the closest items out now I'd compare it too would be the Furious (APG) weapon property which gives +2 enhancement bonus to attack/damage when using an iconic class ability (rage) for +1 bonus. And the sword of subtlety is functionally pretty close to that ability doubled so a +2 bonus.

That said furious is probably too good in my opinion. Every barbarian should want it. And this would be the must have enchant for all sneak attackers. But it is the closest new item that I would be pricing off of for custom items.

Personally, I dislike the idea of extrapolating the pricing of these "uniquely designed" magical weapons & armour. If effectively makes them just another type of enhancement.

If they were supposed to be just another type of enhancement, then that's what they should have been written as.

Still, YMMV and I have no problem with a GM who decides to houserule otherwise.

It's similar to:
Furious enchant (+1 price)
Duelist Gloves (not a weapon, similar power)
Maybe Greymantle weapon (+1)

It seems the few items that grant + to hit and damage beyond normal enhancement are +1.

However +4 to hit and damage is a big bonus. I'd rule it a +2 ability, maybe +3 tops.

Mark it as FAQ for an official answer. Rogues struggle with to hit as it is so it would be nice if this could be placed on any weapon by RAW.

Have you talked to your GM about the pricing? What exactly are you trying to create?

Precision isn't exactly important with pricing.
