Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Reading a few threads around here it seems my experience on how fast characters level is not the norm. My group goes through an adventure path book in 3 to 4 game sessions, we level about every other week.

In talks about magic item rarity, healing, access to higher level magic, ect it seems that some people play for months and don't level this is crazy to me. My players would revolt if they didn't level at least once or twice a month.

This is not new to Pathfinder, been gaming forever it seems started in 86' with older brothers first edition stuff. We as a group have always leveled after a couple sessions.

So what is normal for the rest of you?

I personally tend to level my group up when feels appropriate. If they have just gone 6 or 7 heavy sessions with a lot of big combats and such like then thats usually a good cue. On saying that however, I am going to change that to actually tracking the numbers properly, if only because it makes sense with the Kingmaker Adventure Path to do exactly that.

I like to crack out the first few levels relatively quick ( level every one or two sessions). After that I switch to about once every three or four sessions. No matter how I do it I will inevitably hear the hopeful and "Do we level up?" complete with crossed hands and puppy dog eyes at the end of every session.

In my group we usually level every two or three sessions, our sessions are usually 6-8 hours long (6-8 hours of gaming that is, 8-10 hours in general).

I run pretty hardcore simulationist style, so how fast you advance depends a LOT on how risk-averse your party is. For instance, near the town your party begins, there might be a small band of bandits (mostly CR 1/2 or less) as well as a few ogres, and a tribe of orcs that raids periodically, and probably a few areas that are known to be haunted by the undead. There might even be a dragon reputed to lurk in the mountains a few days from you. What your party chooses to go after will determine the risk it faces and the rewards reaped if successful. I won't push you into accepting APL+4 fights or preserve you from APL+10 ones either. You do your research and due diligence and decide what you where and what you're going to try to face.

I would say we are at about your rate. We have been playing pathfinder for about a year now, and when playing through adventure paths it is usually two sessions per level. We probably get four solid hours of gaming in per session. This feels about right for this system, though it is certainly faster than we leveled with 3.5 or especially 2e.

While playing adventure paths I have found my groups tend to level about once per two sessions (a little faster for the first three levels perhaps). Our sessions are around 12 hours or so, so they are long ones... I suppose that means if we did the average (according to WotC research a while back) of 4 hrs once per week we would be doing it once every 6 weeks or so (but with more banter and stuff I would imagine once per 2 months).

My group runs weekly sessions of 3-4 hour length - on the medium advancement track we tend to get through an AP volume in about 6-8 weeks... so every 2 or 3 sessions is a level - well, except for when the adventure gets less linear and progress relies more on the players deciding what to do next... this week will be the third session of Serpent's Skull for them, and they have earned just shy of 500 experience thus far because they were too busy not actually doing anything worth XP.

I am running a six man group through Rise of the Runelords and we just finished book one and they are all level four with most about halfway through that level. I am using the medium XP track and I believe that Sundays game that finished book one was session 10 (average 6 hour sessions).
